Guillermo Del Toro to Direct 3D Stop-Motion Pinocchio
Guillermo del Toro will team with Mark Gustafson, animation director of The Fantastic Mr. Fox, to helm Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, a 3D stop-motion animated film for the Jim Henson Company, Variety reports. It marks the first animated feature for the director.
Del Toro previously had been set to produce the movie, based on Gris Grimly’s 2002 illustrated adaptation of the Carlo Collodi fairy tale, with Grimly and Gustafson co-directing. Del Toro developed the story, set in Italy between World War I and World War II — . “It was when everyone was behaving like a puppet, except for puppets,” he told the trade paper — with Grimly and his Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark collaborator Matthew Robbins.
The year-long shoot in summer 2013. Although del Toro hasn’t made any casting decisions, he said he’s considered Tom Waits for the role of Geppetto, and Donald Sutherland for the fox.
