Avengers Star Clark Gregg Ponders Coulson’s Future

NOTE: This post contains spoilers for Marvel’s The Avengers SPOILERS.

With appearances in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and The Avengers, Clark Gregg’s S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson is a connective thread of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, becoming a fan-favorite character though his calm yet commanding dealings with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. So, it came as a shock when Agent Coulson died dfending his teammates and the world in director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers.

However, there’s an adage in comics that dead only means dead when it comes to Uncle Ben, so maybe there’s a little wiggle room.

Ideas have been circulating like crazy, from Gregg returning as a Life Model Decoy (a perfect duplicate robot, if you’re unfamiliar with S.H.I.E.L.D. parlance) or possibly as the basis for the android The Vision. In the comics, the synthetic hero has been modeled on the brain waves of various characters. It’s not that far of a stretch to hear Phil Coulson’s voice with just the faintest hint of metal in it, is it?

Speaking with Ain’t It Cool News about some of the theories, Gregg addressed his character’s death admitting that fans know as much about Coulson’s future as he does.

“I have no idea. I love all of those theories,” he said. “To me I just enjoy it so much that these guys have a Tumblr thing where they’ve got all of these pictures of people like writing “#CoulsonLives, ‘Coulson Lives’ in sand … someone painted it on a bridge, another person arranged library books. I just love all of that stuff, but you know I think I really am trying to kind of … And I never know what Marvel is going to do, but I have to kind of feel like I’m trying to do my own business with ‘I probably won’t get to play this guy again.’ I love it, who knows? Who knows what the fans can make happen, you know what I mean? That would be hilarious to me if the fans somehow managed … It would be the fans who brought Coulson back to life, but I don’t think there’s any plans. They’ve got enough superheroes to now bring in to take his place, you know? I think people would rather see Wasp than me come back.”

How wrong you are Gregg. I would much rather see you return than most anyone (especially the wasp).

Give us the Vision if you please.

  • Josh Kappes

As much as I love Wasp, and MAN do I love Wasp, I would rather see Coulson

I have to admit, the idea of Coulson/Vision is growing on me.

I would like to think that he is a clone, and there are more of him, which can be brought ‘online’ is need be,  So it is very possible for him to come back.  And why not have him come back as well as ‘Wasp’

But thats my thoughts on the matter :0) .

At least Coulson got the chance to blast Loki across the room before he died. I can see him as The Vision, oddly enough.

There was speculation that Coulson was a Skrull, shapeshifters and the real Coulson is still alive. Some believe that S.H.I.E.L.D. is in works with Skrulls, but they won’t be called Skrulls in the movie. Others say it was a robot that died. I don’t know myself, I think I’ll be satisfied with anything they decide to do with this.

I’m so torn on this issue.  I loved Coulson – more than I thought I would as he never even featured in a comic – and felt like I was stabbed in the heart (no pun intended) when he died.  I actually cried “no” in the theater a fraction too loud causing my wife to face-palm.  However, my biggest fear is that him coming back to life could almost cheapen his death – and his pure awesomeness.  His death was the single reason that pushed Stark et al to pick up the disassembled Avengers Initiative in the movie and put aside all the issues and egos that they had been stumbling over.

Bring him back for flashbacks or his own story set prior – but bringing him back for the next movie… well it is like walking on thin ice.  There is a chance it *might* work but it is incredibly fragile and the last thing we want for this franchise is to lose momentum.

If they can work it and balance it right – just like they did with having so many superheroes on screen at once – well okay.  If Joss can save the good name of the Hulk with the re-casting of Mark Ruffalo and deliver beyond expectations (and I remember the outcries of ‘bad move’ following the announcement) to give us something better than we have ever experienced, then fine.

Yes, Marvel and the powers that be can bring him back, retcon or twist the perception of the events to fit but, to be cliche and steal another Marvel franchise quote, someone once said, “with great power comes great responsibility.”  Coulson is – and will always remain – a legend.  No action should be taken that will diminish it.

That would be a cool twist, but don’t Skrulls turn back into Skrulls after their death?

Id rather see Coulson come back as Vision than the wasp.

Coulson as The Vision + a billion!

Definitely not true. You had become my reason for even watching these movies. If they’re smart, they’ll find a way to bring you back

  • BK

Oh, man, that is absolutely false. Everyone wants Coulson to come back. I would rather have Coulson come back than have ANY new characters be introduced. Seriously.
