Joss Whedon ‘Very Torn’ About Returning For Avengers Sequel

For some directors, working on one of the most successful films in history would be enough to bring them back for a second round. However, that may not be the case with The Avengers writer/director Joss Whedon.

“You know, I’m very torn [about returning for Avengers 2],” he told Hero Complex before the U.S. release of the $1-billion blockbuster. “It’s an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody else’s story, even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it. But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really cool.”

It’s important to note when the interview took place, so it’s entirely possible that Whedon’s views on a sequel have changed. We do know that a follow-up will be a ways off, as Marvel Studios has announced its slate for the next few years, which includes Iron Man 3, Captain America 2, Thor 2 and a pair of unannounced films.

Joss Whedon made Avengers work. He also has cool ideas for a sequel, and, reportedly, the mid-credits scene was his idea.
So, you know, if he has any interest in doing the sequel, me and a million fanboys will geek out. If he hasn’t, I’ll respect his choice, hope the sequel gets a good director and wish all the best for Joss’s future endeavors.

I LOVE the Avengers movie, one of the best days of my year, without a doubt.
But I don’t really want an Avengers sequel….Don’t mess with perfection.

C’mon men.. . they were crazy enought to do this movie, now to the next step:
Civil War movie, Infinity Gauntlet Movie, Secret War (Bendis version) movie, even Avengers vs X-men movie, lets go for bigger things now!

We know Marvel can do it right!

  • durkadurka

PLEASE do Avengers 2, Joss!!  There’s no one else.  Some of the biggest and best directors in Hollywood today wouldn’t even come close to what you could do with the characters again!

  • tomdaylight

This is news? He has like five other projects on his plate right now. And there’s a whole bunch of other films to supposedly come out before Avengers 2 that haven’t even started production yet…

  • Greg Phillips

If he doesn’t return for Avengers 2 (I hope he does), maybe he could do a Justice League movie for Warner. Anything to make that film not suck!

LOVED the Avengers. And am a massive mark for all things Whedon, but Im not entirely sure its true about the mid credits scene being his idea. Thanos was ALWAYS slated for an appearance back when Favreau was still attached as director. Now, when Joss came on board the story and script were completely redone, so the way he appeared might have been changed. But Thanos certainly wasnt Joss’ idea

*gets on hands and knees and begs* Please oh Please do it Joss!!!

  • Peter

Solution:  co-write the sequel with Tim Minear, hand of the directing reins to someone else.

  • MegaGearX

Get out of here. I’d think coming back for Avengers II would be a no-brainer. I would be very surprised if he didn’t come back.

“he told Hero Complex before the U.S. release of the $1-billion blockbuster.”

  • Ben Gebhart

At this point, I just can’t see ANYONE pulling-off “Avengers 2″ but Whedon, because the movie just wasn’t meant to happen so magically…and he did it. Marvel needs to throw money at him, build statues in his honor, offer to finance his personal projects…WHATEVER IT TAKES.

Get the man on the job, Marvel.

    Do it.

  • Secretmantra

Actually, Feige said Joss had asked to put Thanos in, so …

  • UweToiletBoll

You have gone too far there.  Uwe Boll only has the ability to make a comicbook/videogame movie bomb.  Please respect this skill.  I am offended for Mr. Boll at your insinuations of box office success.

  • Joeva_za

Come on Joss Whedon – give us Janet van Dyne PLEASE!!

  • Bill4935

Said Whedon, “It’s an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately somebody
    else’s story,”
    — (if I seem too eager to rejoin the project, then my agent gets mad at me.)

“…even though I feel like I did get to put myself into it.”
–(in my first draft, you-know-who got killed when a giant spar off a spaceship impaled him, but the studio made me change that to Loki’s scepter).

“…But at the same time, I have a bunch of ideas, and they all seem really
    — (I’m already working on it, so it’s totes a done deal, but in this town you can’t announce that until the contracts are signed and the check is cashed).

They may or may not do versions of some of those stories, but even if they do they will simply call them “The Avengers 2″ or “The Avengers: Civil War” or whatever. They would have to be very foolish not to hang on to that Avengers branding for the sequels.

  • Ross Xander Diprose

To be honest when it comes to Avengers stories on the big screen… well Avengers stories that would work anyways, Civil War doesn’t even come close to one that would a) work properly or b) hold my interest. In printed form it worked well enough.. but that was with all the marvel characters at their disposal and the (45 years) of history between those characters that made it work.. when working in the film Universe go for the more bombastic, outlandish arcs for inspiration…

Im talking Ultron, Kang the conquerer, alternate versions of Hulk or whatever.. just not the team implodes and fights each other… just no! A lot of people are calling for it to happen.. but then again a lot of people called for a wolverines solo film and Venom in the spiderman films and look how they turned out!

They’ve got Thanos (probably next), they should then go on to Ultron and then Kang for a final fourth film if they get that far. Those are pretty awesome villains to base the movies around. Then you’ve still got the Red Skull, Loki, Enchantress, Baron Zemo, Crossbones, Mandarin, Fin Fang Foom or WHOEVER they so decide to feature in the solo films… They fought frickin aliens that flew through a portal from the other side of the universe OR another dimension.. anything is game now in the Marvel film universe and people (as judging by the BILLION plus the movie has made) will accept it.

  • edge

    Ah,he’ll be back.
its just too big of temptation, just like Avatar to Cameron:-)

  • James

Can’t really see Avengers 2 actually happening AND being any good – they needed to double-down and follow it straight up rather than going the Iron Man 3/Thor 2/Cap 2 route. They’d have an easier time getting Whedon back if they could offer him complete control over what happens next, there’d be less time for paycheques to inflate, and so forth. Oh well.

  • Daniel Wheeler

I don’t really mind if he comes back for the sequel or not even tho i love his work he has such a brilliant creative mind that i would almost rather see him do something of his own again like Dollhouse or Firefly were he can really go full on.

  • Daniel Wheeler

I just don’t think it’s all that hard to pull off an Avengers movie that it has been established.
