Hiring Writer, Disney Sets Sail With Peter and the Starcatchers

Disney has tapped screenwriter Jesse Wigutow to adapt Peter and the Starcatchers, the bestselling children’s novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, Deadline reports.

Published in 2004 by Disney’s Hyperion Books, the novel serves as a prequel to J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter and Wendy, and delves into the back story of Peter Pan. The book was followed by four sequels, and was adapted as a play, which opened on Broadway this spring (it’s been nominated for nine Tony Awards, including best play).

Peter and the Starcatchers is at least the third Peter Pan-based movie winding its way through Hollywood, behind Sony’s Neverland and the Ben Hibon-directed Pan.

I’m assuming the reason they didn’t ask Dave Barry to write it was

    1) The last project he was attached to was Big Trouble, a film that was screalingly funny on September 10th 2001, but released later.

    2) They decided to shy away from the fart jokes.
