"Justice League": Exploring How Superman Returns (Again)
Comic Books, Film
This week, Harry Potter goes a-hunting for lady ghosts, the House of Miyazaki delivers another anime classic, and Sherlock Holmes lives to solve crimes another day. Plus, George Lucas blows stuff up, World War II-style, Tom Hardy and Chris Pine duke it out, and Lou Diamond Phillips fights a metal tornado.
PICK OF THE WEEK: Sherlock: Season Two (DVD & Blu-ray)
It is, yes, every bit as good as you’ve been told. Doctor Who mastermind Steven Moffat has some experience updating classic British genre stories — his Jekyll miniseries is exemplary — but his dramatic recasting of Arthur Conan Doyle’s enduring detective as a 21st century sociopath is a thing of beauty. And the second season (another three episodes’ worth) continues being beautiful, and its stars, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, continue to prove themselves to be invaluable additions to the Holmes canon.
The Woman in Black (DVD & Blu-ray)
Harry Potter goes hunting for ghosts! Well, at least, that’s what you’re supposed to think about this Hammer Films release. But, hey, it’s Daniel Radcliffe in a haunted house.
Red Tails (DVD & Blu-ray)
George Lucas put a lot of his own money behind this story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first black pilots allowed to fly combat missions during World War II. Why? Because he thought it was one of the greatest stories of wartime heroism he ever heard.
The Secret World of Arrietty (DVD & Blu-ray)
This isn’t the first time there’s been a movie about the Borrowers, author Mary Norton’s miniature thieves who only steal what they need to survive. But it’s the only one that’s been animated by Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli. And that, my friends, counts for a lot.
This Means War (DVD & Blu-ray)
In which Captain Kirk and Bane fight for the affections of … Reese Witherspoon? Really?
Teen Wolf: The Complete Season One (DVD & Blu-ray)
As far as I know, there’s no scene of the teenaged werewolf Scott McCall surfing on top of a van …which leads me to believe that MTV wanted to play this horror series straight.
The River: The Complete First Season (DVD & Blu-ray)
Also known as “the complete ONLY season,” as this found-footage horror series — about a family of scientists who head down the Amazon and find freakiness — was canceled.
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Alphas (DVD & Blu-ray)
If you really feel like you need to own a short-film prequel to a new Ghost Recon video game, then here’s your chance. Or, you could just watch it online.
American Warships (DVD & Blu-ray)
The latest mockbuster attempts to capitalize on Battleship’s Navy-versus-aliens derring-do. Problem is, no one gave a crap about Battleship … so let’s hope audiences are intrigued by Mario Van Peebles and Carl Weathers.
Metal Tornado (DVD & Blu-ray)
Starring Lou Diamond Phillips and Greg Evigan versus … a metal tornado. Everything you need to know is on the bloody box cover.
