G.I. Joe: Retaliation Toys Pulled After Studio Moves Film’s Release
Last week’s announcement that Paramount Pictures will delay the release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation came as a surpise to many, but according to Variety, there was also a shock to toy retailers, too: Stores have been asked to send toys based on the film back to Hasbro. The 47 figures and vehicles weren’t supposed to be on shelves until next year, but some retailers put them out early.
“G.I. Joe is an ongoing consumer franchise and therefore there is merchandise available to consumers,” Hasbro said in a statement. “There is a limited amount of G.I. Joe: Retaliation product at retail now, but in light of the movie moving out to March 29, 2013, the majority of the movie line will be made available early next year in time for the film’s release.”
Hardcore fans might be able to pick up some of the sold toys on eBay or at conventions, but otherwise, you’ll have to wait until the film’s new spring 2013 release date. One problem stores are encountering, though, is that they set other Joe toys on clearance to make space for the new Retaliation and now might have no Joe product.
In the meantime, the pegs formerly reserved for Retaliation figures will be given over to other Hasbro figures likes The Amazing Spider-Man and what’s still left from The Avengers.
