This week, the fourth season of the adventures of Sookie Stackhouse and her crazy lady parts hit shelves, chimpanzees play spy games and President Lincoln takes time out from hunting vampires to cap some zombies.
PICK OF THE WEEK: True Blood: The Complete Fourth Season (DVD & Blu-ray)
I’m gonna put this right here on front street: I stopped watching True Blood midway through the first season, as it felt like a not-particularly-inspired pastiche of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But, apparently, the show has gone completely bat-shit crazy … and I can always get behind some televised crazy. After all, there’s something to be said of a show that has this to say about its heroine: “I am so over Sookie and her precious fairy vagina and her unbelievably stupid name.”
Dragon Age: Dawn of the Seeker (DVD & Blu-ray)
If you’ve been jonesing for a feature-length version of one of Dragon Age’s cutscenes — with some pretty decent CG animation — then here you go. Maybe this’ll hold you over until the next chapter in the videogame comes out.
Lancelot Link: Secret Chimp (DVD)
Sometimes, the only thing that’ll make a day better is chimps (with badly dubbed voices) engaging in high-stakes espionage on a 1970s TV show. Good thing they’ve got those opposable thumbs.
John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow 2012 (Blu-ray)
This Korean remake of Woo’s 1986 film — which was good, but didn’t have the cultural impact of The Killer or Hard Boiled — was done with Woo’s approval. But it was done without Chow Yun-fat in the lead … so it’s hard to say if it has our approval.
Wing Commander Academy: Compete Series ((DVD & Blu-ray)
It’d almost be worth checking these 13 episodes out simply for the voice cast, which includes Malcolm McDowell, Mark Hamill and Dana Delany. But I remember seeing the feature film. Oooof.
Abraham Lincoln Vs. Zombies (DVD)
These days, there’s almost no such thing as a blockbuster without an accompanying mockbuster from The Asylum. So here’s the necessary riff on. Do with it what you will.
