Iron Man 3 Villain Details, Surprise Photos Emerge From Movie Set

Filming has only just begun in North Carolina on Marvel’s Iron Man 3, and already the production is leaking like a sieve, with rumors flying about the sequel’s villains, even as the first spoiler-ish photo emerges from the set. If that’s not enough of a tip-off, be assured that potentially major spoilers follow.

According to Latino Review and ComicBook.com, the word in Wilmington is that Ben Kingsley does indeed play the classic Iron Man foe The Mandarinthat’s despite director Shane Black’s dismissal of the character as a racist caricature — but he won’t be the primary antagonist. Instead Guy Pearce’s geneticist Aldrich Killian will be the primary villain, with The Mandarin serving as his “silent partner.”

In the 2005-2006 “Iron Man: Extremis” storyline on which the movie is loosely based, Killian is the co-creator of a nanotechnological drug manufactured by the U.S. military in an attempt to replicate the Super-Soldier Serum. The serum triggers a mutation that grants the subject superhuman abilities.

With those villainous roles apparently sorted out, we’re left with two minor criminals from Marvel comics: Lt. Col. Eric Savin (played by James Badge Dale), who becomes the cyborg Coldblood, and Firepower (Ashley Hamilton), the pilot of an experimental armored suit created by the government.

And that is where it gets really interesting, or “interesting,” depending on your perspective: What Would Tyler Durden Do has set photos of someone in Iron Patriot armor (below; many more at the source). While the battlesuit was first donned in Dark Avengers #1 by Norman Osborn, the website contends in the film it will be worn by Eric Savin — suggesting he starts out as Iron Patriot before taking a villainous turn as Coldblood. That speculation should be taken with a grain of salt, but the photos are impossible to deny.

Iron Man 3, which opens May 3, 2013, also stars returning franchise stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle and Jon Favreau as well as newcomer Rebecca Hall.

And the great debacle of the second decade of the 21st century has begun. Iron Patriot – ridiculous. Iron Man 3 looks like it will suck bowels

  • Daforce

That Iron Patriot “photo” is probably one of the worst uses of Photoshop I’ve seen. I’ve seen 5 year olds finger paint more realistic looking pictures than this supposedly leaked photo.

  • Irondarkknight

Most Likely, the Millitary will have repurbished the War machine armor for this new guy (see the gatline gun on his sholder), cus they didnt want someone (rodey) piloting it that has a personal connection to stark, and with cap having saved the world in the avengers, patriotistic heroes are all the rage so they created this.
its likely this guy here will be the iron patriot and will get injured or even killed, and he comes back holding stark responsible. i also heard a female actress has been cast as Firepower

Will be interesting to see how they manifest the Extremis virus, particularly if this Coldblood character gets it. From the comics, there’s not one stitch of armor involved.

are we sure that this is not a joke ? , that page WWTDD dont look too serious to me …

  • careyt

why wouldn’t that be Detroit Steel instead of Iron Patriot? It makes far more sense than using Iron Patriot and it looks more like it to me also.

  • lol

    Hope you aren’t serious…

  • Waddupjoshjohn

what kind of BS is this?? in this day in age, with ALLLLLLLLL the asian actors around, you can’t hire one to play the MANDARIN??? i hope they’re wrong, because it’s an insult to all asian actors IMHO!

The Mandarin, Extremis, AND Iron Patriot?

This movie is sounding more and more like Spider-Man 3 in terms of juggling storylines.

  • http://twitter.com/p_keely Patrick Keely

Agreed.  Mandarin is a great enough villain on his own.

  • Bowlzee

I think it could be another Marvel possibly setting the stage for a future Avengers movie. Show the Iron Patriot suit briefly and have tony take it and put it away for safe keeping etc… get a Civil War type movie for the next avengers, follow up with Dark Avengers story line with Norman osborn finding Iron patriot suit in tony’s vault…. That type of forward thinking is what makes Marvel movies so good right now.

  • Pottybreak

If you look at other photos when helmet is up, it is James Badge Dale. I think this movie will be more of a cross between Armor Wars and Extremis

  • slafaive

Amazing. One photo and story and you can call this film as sucking bowels already. You, sir, are a soothsaying genius!

  • Zenstrive

Too many villains. This is turning into two hours long commercial…

  • Happily LS

If it’s part of the backstory of a character we already know is in the film, why is it surprising? (And why would someone bother to Photoshop it?)

  • http://twitter.com/sillymander sillymander

Why does Howie Mandel look so old in that pic.

    Yes, I know it’s Ben Kingsley…

India is not China and in case you haven’t noticed, the Mandarin is a word with very obvious Chinese connotations and Indians aren’t often mistaken for Chinese.

It’s also not possible. Sony owns the rights to Norman Osborn, Marvel Studios can’t make any movies with him.

Plus, it would be a stupid idea, given that Dark Reign and the Dark Avengers was one of the dumbest things Marvel ever produced.

  • asif_m_sardar

Sounds a little Transformerish, all those guys in armour suits beating the crap out of each other.
But I’ll reserve judgement – Shane Black is a class act & this could be something brilliant.

  • http://squidoo.com/retroblogs Atomic Kommie Comics

So he plays the character as Eurasian.
Avoids the “taping the eyes” cliche, and could be used to give him an even nastier attitude to the world in general due to racial prejudice!
BTW, The Hood in Thunderbirds (both movie and 1960s tv series), was a Malaysian/Pacific Islander!

  • mel

I want to see Jackie Chan as Mandarin.

  • The Cuban Linx

Ben Kingsley is of Asian desent by way of India. He legally changed his birth given name to “Ben Kingsley” in the 1960s when he became an actor!!!!!!!

  • theBrenguin

In England the word Asian is used mostly for people who originated in India or Pakistan – we refer to Chinese people as Oriental .. my point is .. Sir Ben Kingsley was born in India so is actually Asian …..

  • pDUB

    now THATS racist.

  • SmackiHand

Because an Asian character should be played by an Asian character?  Are you that stupid, or just that ignorant?   I mean, if we were going to make a movie about you, shouldn’t we find the biggest jerkhole in the world, as to play you accurately?

  • lead_sharp

    how?

  • Demoncat4

intersting to have iron patriot be some one new since due to sony they can’t use norman. though four villains is getting into overkill and spider man three territory . though glad that maybe the Mandarin is  going to give iron man some pain.

  • Toneloak

I can see that especially considering Tony’s fourth villain that person being himself that part his self-destructive personality he wears so well.

  • EVH

    bwahahahahahahahahaha.
    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA!
    HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHA111!!!!

im laughin at you, not with you.

  • Daforce

I’ve seen all the pics (yes, including the precious unmasked ones) and I’ve worked with PhotoShop enough to tell a fake when looking at it. Someone added more pixel noise to the color than the original photo (which is of the stunt double for War Machine) has in it. In fact, the one without the mask shows the clearest use of pixel noise added, since the person doing it forgot to add it to the neck piece in the picture. It’s really not that hard to spot, if you have eyes that work.

  • Rob

Interesting…the Mandarin is a racist caricature yet they have a a non asian playing  an asian caricature…wtf is this 1940′s Hollywood?

  • Katarzyna Skop

I like the idea of having Iron Patriot or Iron Patriot-esque character in MCU. As Mythos said, it’s bound to piss Tony off. Not to mention, it’s a basis for great jokes about Tony and Steve!

I, for one, am getting more and more excited about this movie.

  • cpt rogers

Extremis or the mandarin would be perfect, but changing the Iron patriot from Norman Osborn is a slap in the face to every marvel fan.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IDIIS7VCL2DXI4R4KCSJ5IGWKY yahoo-IDIIS7VCL2DXI4R4KCSJ5IGWKY

WTH!! Casting an Indian to portray a Chinese Character.  First it happened in The Last Airbender Movie, turning a nation of Asians to Indians.  Now we have Manadarin played by Ghandi.  Get with it Hollywood, stop taking away roles from asian actors

  • CudaBiro

He never said Chinese. He said Asian. :P

  • CudaBiro

It’s called build up. Mandarin IS deserving of his own film as he’s Tony’s archenemy, but there’s been zero actual build up for the character.

  • CudaBiro

Sounds Iron Mannish, all these guys in armour suits beating the crap out of each other.

No seriously, it’s a problem with Marvel rogue gallery’s. Spider-man has a bunch of animal-themed baddies. Hulk has a ton of gamma baddies. The X-Men fight mutants. Iron Man? He fights guys in tin can armors.

  • CudaBiro

Kingsley is actually of Asian descent.

  • CudaBiro

Making Norman an Iron Man foe is a slap in the face to every Spider-man fan.

  • CudaBiro

I wonder which continent India’s a part of. Hmmmmm.
