Axel-In-Charge: Extending "Secret Wars," Excitement for a "Totally Awesome Hulk"
The man who created Hellraiser, directed films like Lord of Illusions and Nightbreed and wrote numerous novels will next tackle a genre mash-up called Zombies vs. Gladiators for Amazon Studios. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film follows a gladiator in the ancient Roman Colosseum who finds himself fighting off a zombie horde created by one of his fellow fighters.
“I’m excited by the opportunity to interweave two very rich narrative threads,” Barker said. “One of them concerns itself with the reality of the decadence of Rome and its rise and fall. The other is a fantastical narrative element: the living dead. My brief to myself on this project is to give the audience not only zombies they have never seen before but also a Rome they have never seen before.”
Amazon Studios takes various concepts and puts them up for critique on the site. Projects can move from the general list to what they call The Consider List and then ultimately on to the Development Slate where the flicks actually get made. Zombies vs. Gladiators is one of 16 films on the slate to be produced for theatrical release.
