CCI: Marvel Reveals Titles For Thor, Captain America Sequels

Concept art for "Guardians of the Galaxy"

This evening at Comic-Con International, Marvel Studios revealed its plans for Phase Two of its cinematic universe, announcing titles for the Captain America and Thor sequels, while confirming Guardians of the Galaxy and revealing the first concept art. Director Edgar Wright also showed off test footage for the long-developing Ant-Man.

Lending credence to speculation that the follow-up to Captain America: The First Avenger will borrow from Ed Brubaker’s acclaimed Marvel comics storyline, the sequel to last year’s hit will be called Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, the film opens April 4, 2014.

Helmed by Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones), Thor: The Dark World will arrive in theaters Nov. 8, 2013. And Guardians of the Galaxy is, of course, the mystery release set for Aug. 1, 2014.

Look for a full panel report soon on Comic Book Resources.

Man…here I was hoping for Helmut Zemo…guess not.  Too soon for Winter Soldier.  He would have worked better in the third to finish the trilogy.

  • Leeturn

I agree its a little too soon for winter soldier, just seems that reveal needs to simmer

  • Leeturn

Also considering few people actually read comics, the title puts spoilers for anyone who wants to wiki this winter soldier character

  • Michael Sacal

I’d like to see a Captain America Invaders movie.

  • careyt

I hope they can find someone for Rocket who sounds like a younger Gilbert Gottfried as that’s the voice I hear in my head whenever he talks in the comic books.

  • Jack Derunk

Ahh the internets, where everyone knows better.

  • mobbdeep

its not a spoiler if you hunt down the information yourself.

  • Elfap

  • kat

Might too soon for Winter Soldier but oh well. ANYHOW, I hope Guardians and Ant-Man are successful enough to lead to other projects outside major characters like Thor or Cap.

  • David

Why assume it’s a trilogy? Marvel’s got very long-term plans for these things and I doubt a reboot is in order.

  • Squirrel

Summer 2014 cannot come fast enough.  Also nice to see Antman finally moving past the early stages.

  • Ortiz

Guardians of the Galaxy is a bold move, but man, I already love it, really, really hope this one is successful, just imagine the potential of the cosmic Marvel Universe. Can’t wait.

  • HED

I could see Zemo featuring in a Winter Soldier movie, seeing as they almost certainly won’t be using Red Skull…

  • darthtigris

So still nothing concrete on Ant-Man then.

And that Thor subtitle tells me NOTHING as to what the movie could be about.  Awesome.

Winter Soldier a bit too soon as others have said, but it does allow for some Forrest Gump meets Nikita flashbacks for ole Bucky.  Also would it be too much to have a blonde, American accented Hayley Atwell for Sharon Carter?  I liked her a lot.  And boobies.

Whedon needs to write the script for GotG.  That’s all I ask and all that I’d need.

Still can’t believe BP won’t happen in my lifetime …

  • jrau18

I don’t think it’s too soon. As long as they make the movie about the Winter Solder himself and what he’s doing. Treat him like a standard bad guy and slowly build to the reveal at the end of him being Bucky. Then have part three be about saving Bucky.

  • jrau18

    Why not?

  • TheThingisJolly

The Dark World = Dark Elves = Malekith??? Also, I don’t think it’s too soon for Winter Soldier, and I’m stoked to see it, but I just don’t see how they’d top it. It’s clearly the best Cap story and anything else would be a letdown, unless they’re building up to Cap getting shot in a Civil War-based Avengers 2. Winter Soldier would also make a cool Avenger! So would Drax.

  • Thomas Colen

Ok DC/WB lets have a chat, time for some serious soul searching and to hang your heads in shame. Marvel is going forward with movies of B and C level characters, one of which will be a team film feature a walking alien tree and a talking bipedal raccoon and you can’t even make a good green lantern movie or even get a wonder women film off the ground. Really… you have to be kidding me.  The new Suerman looks like warmed over junk and after this summer Batman is back to square one.  So at this point you have squat.

  • Galactusjgs

A GOTG flick should pay homage to the original team! Thats the one most recognize and remember, the team was diverse and colorful. Trust me fans are very screwd theyll go looking for Vance and the original team and be pissed. Plus its a good way to opening Marvels cadre of space faring teams, heros and villians along with tie-ins (Avengers).

  • joementum

What are those “star” thingy’s around Groot?
    Also, no Bug?

  • guesr

It’s all good, but they’ d better keep a close eye on Edgar Wright. He’s the only one that showed nothing, again, no release date nothing.

If he can’t do it, I’m sure somebody else can. i don’t want a second Avengers movie with characters like Black Widow, when we could have Pym and the Wasp

  • Mars Bonfire

If one good thing can come out GOTG, it’s that some of the Rocker Racoon royalties will help Bill Mantlo.

  • CodeDisQus

Shut up and TAKE MY MONEY!!!

  • homeless_hero

I like how he sounds in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. Is this suitable enough for your tastes?

  • CogInTheWheel

    This news exploded my brain.

It isnt “too soon” for anything, the movies clearly have their own pacing.

  • Iammrmatt

I don’t think it’s too soon at all for Winter Soldier. Remember these movies aren’t for us. They are for the millions of others who know nothing of these characters and want to see a good film. In this industry you need to make 400 million just to have a film be called a success these days. Marvel has to use established film characters just to draw in the every day movie goers. Bucky is still fresh in peoples minds. It’s a cool concept for them just as much as it was for us. I’d love to see Zemo, and I’m betting we will given his current hydra leading push in the comics. Plus Zola too having been responsible for Bucks death, is bound to return in flashbacks. For Marvel to continue this huge idea franchise they are doing, they need guaranteed bank. And the most acclaimed Cap story and character arc of all time beats out Zemo, Crossbones, Flagsmasher, Batroc, or any other meh style villain. We should be happy they are giving us fans great arcs and nods to comics while building an entire film universe.

  • Statham

Wrong. Wright showed his test footage.

  • Kether

Here’s hoping that Adam Warlock is a part of the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

  • Disco_Magic

Pretty sure NO ONE is going to this movie hoping to see Vance Astro, Yondu or any of the original gang. Let’s calm down and just enjoy what could be a very quirky, fun sci-fi popcorn movie.

  • guest

It’s obviously still too soon to see what they’ll end up doing, but StarLord needs the rest of his helmet!

  • Lewis4510

I could care less about Ant Man but Guardians of the Galaxy…oh hell yes. I’m digging the concept art. It has a Ralph Mcquarie Star Wars vibe. Hopefully the line up will include at least one other member.  Let the casting speculation and rumors commence.

  • David Fullam

I fangasmed in my pants when I saw the subtitle to the cap sequel!!!

  • Kaniole

    Guardians of the Galaxy? Really?
As a veteran comic reader, I cannot congratulate enough Marvel studios.
They are having the balls to do the kind of incredible movies that we just dreamed about for a life time!

  • Demoncat4

surprised they are going with the winter solider for number two for cap would think they would save him for three or a future one and also surprised for guardians of the galaxy was hoping the next non avenger character would be either black panther or doctor strange finaly or maybe when the hulk film is going to happen.

  • Dswynne1

I can see Jason Statham voicing Rocket Raccoon…

  • guesr

     Keyword: “Test”… So basically nothing…

  • Joshua H

I’m finding myself to be indifferent on the Guardians film since it has a version of the team that I’m completely unfamiliar with. Maybe some cameos of the original team might be in order?
