Fox has confirmed it’s pushing ahead with a sequel to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic Prometheus, with stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace already signed on for the follow-up, which would arrive in 2014 or 2015.
However, The Hollywood Reporter notes that co-writer Damon Lindelof may not be available, leading the studio to search for new screenwriters. “Ridley is incredibly excited about the movie, but we have to get it right,” Emma Watts, Fox’s president of production, tells the trade paper. “We can’t rush it.”
Lindelof teased ahead of film’s June premiere that Prometheus would be the progenitor of two sequels: 1979’s Alien (obviously), and another that’s been referred to as Paradise.
“The audience is given a little more information than the characters in the movie have,” he said. “And it’s our hope that fires the imagination up enough for them to say, ‘I might want to see Prometheus again’ or ‘I definitely want to see where this movie takes me.’ Because this movie has two children: One of these children grows up to be Alien, but the other child is going to grow up, and God knows what happens to them. And that’s what the sequel to Prometheus would be.”
The $130 million film grossed a respectable $303 million worldwide.
