Osamu Tezuka’s Black Jack Manga Becoming Live-Action TV Drama

Entertainment One, the Toronto-based company that co-produces AMC’s Hell on Wheels and Syfy’s Haven, is developing a live-action television series based on Osamu Tezuka’s classic manga Black Jack. Deadline reports that Taka Ichise and Doug Davison, who worked together on the U.S. adaptations of The Ring and The Grudge, will executive produce for eOne.

Debuting in 1973, Black Jack centers on a medical mercenary who sells his formidable skills to the highest bidder, treating everyone from crime lords to political leaders to common citizens. With his stitched-up face and cape, Black Jack is a shadowy figure with a complex moral code who, if moved by a patient’s story, will treat them for free, and donates much of his money to charity.

The manga was serialized until 1983, and has been adapted several times in animated form for Japanese television and film.

It’s been adapted for live action in Japan several times as well. I’d imagine this time they’ll cut out the creepy doll with human innards though.

    this might be successful.

Anything but another Marvel/ DC project.Hopefully,it won’t be over the top in the Oldboy style.Any chance this will shut up the pro reboot Batman pro Justice League crowd for awhile?

Hopefully, they get an actor that,at least, is Asian for him. That would be different.

They’ll probably get Tom Cruise to play the lead role. You know how they are with asian actors over here playing roles that are from a popular manga book that are the same race as them.It always ends up with a caucasian actor playing the asian role. It’s a never ending cycle. The only time this doesn’t happen is if the main character is african american but other then that the white actor will play the asian roles, british ones as well and hey, just about any character who is very light skinned.

    Here’s some great examples. http://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2009/11/29/casting-white-actors-in-asian-roles-1957-to-today/
