Will Luther’s Alice Get a Spinoff?

TV spinoffs can be a mixed bag. For every Torchwood or Frasier, there are dozens that just don’t capture the magic of the original. According to Variety, Luther might dip its toe into those waters, with the show’s creator Neil Cross saying “the BBC is very interested” in giving narcissistic sociopath Alice her own series.

“The only real question would be how many and how often we would do it — whether it would be a one-off miniseries or a returning miniseries, a co-production or not,” Cross said.

If you’re unfamiliar with Luther, the first season follows a detective played by Idris Elba who knows that Alice killed her parents, but can’t prove it. Alice inserted herself into Luther’s life, and has grown to think of him as a friend. Cross wants to return to Alice, who wasn’t as involved in the second season.

“The truth is I absolutely adore Alice,” Cross said. “I don’t like to imagine my life without Alice in some way or other. Even if I didn’t sell this thing, I would still end up writing the miniseries. It’s something peculiar, but she’s far more clever than me, far more witty than me, far more everything than me.”

Cross added that he’d like to see the show make its way to America and said that Elba would not be involved, at least at first. He even talked about a Luther film. “We’ve got lots and lots of movie interest, and Idris and I (are being) very careful about what kind of movie we choose to do,” Cross noted. “We’ve got all kinds of criteria of how and when we should do the movie, and we just need to pick our offer carefully. But I’d love to do it next year.”

I have only watched the first episode of Luther, but I absolutely detested Alice, and thought her a one-shot character — something I was very glad of because I did not want to see her again.

If she recurs in Luther, I may not continue watching, and I certainly am not going to watch a spinoff.
