Doctor Who Returns Sept. 1

BBC and BBC America announced today that the seventh season of Doctor Who will premiere in just 10 days — Saturday, Sept. 1 — with the first part of “Asylum of the Daleks.” The news was quickly followed by a new, spoiler-ish trailer, which you can watch below.

The first of five new episodes, the season opener finds the Doctor forced on an impossible mission after being kidnapped by his oldest foes: to enter the Asylum, a planetary prison so terrifying that even the Daleks are afraid of it. The Doctor and the Ponds must find an escape route, but with Amy and Rory’s relationship in jeopardy, and an army of mad Daleks closing in, the Time Lord must not only save their lives but save their marriage.

“We have, I think, our biggest range of stories EVER,” Executive Producer Steven Moffat said in a statement. “We’ve got the return of the Daleks AND the Weeping Angels – both of them poll-topping “Doctor Who” adversaries – in cracking new stories, we’ve got Dinosaurs on a Spaceship (it’s what you’ve always wanted), we’ve got a glorious western with a Cyborg Gunslinger, the most unusual invasion Earth story EVER, and location shooting in New York for the Pond finale.”

Below the trailer you can read the synopses for the first three episodes. The new season of Doctor Who debuts Saturday, Sept. 1 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on BBC America.

Asylum of the Daleks – Episode 1
Kidnapped by his oldest foe, the Doctor is forced on an impossible mission – to a place even the Daleks are too terrified to enter…. the Asylum. A planetary prison confining the most terrifying and insane of their kind, the Doctor and the Ponds must find an escape route. But with Amy and Rory’s relationship in meltdown, and an army of mad Daleks closing in, it is up to the Doctor to save their lives, as well as the Pond’s marriage. Asylum of the Daleks premieres Saturday, September 1, 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Dinosaurs on a Spaceship – Episode 2
An unmanned spaceship hurtles towards certain destruction – unless the Doctor can save it, and its impossible cargo…… of dinosaurs. By his side a ragtag gang of adventurers; a big game hunter, an Egyptian Queen and a surprised member of the Pond family. But little does the Doctor know there is someone else onboard who will stop at nothing to keep hold of his precious, prehistoric cargo. Dinosaurs on a Spaceship premieres Saturday, September 8, 9 p.me. ET/PT

A Town Called Mercy – Episode 3
The Doctor gets a Stetson (and a gun), and finds himself the reluctant Sheriff of a Western town under siege by a relentless cyborg, who goes by the name of, the Gunslinger. But who is he and what does he want? The answer seems to lie with the mysterious, Kahler-Jex, an alien doctor (yes another one) whose initial appearance is hiding a dark secret. A Town Called Mercy premieres Saturday, September 15, 9 p.m. ET/PT.

    YES! A thousand times, yes!

asylum of the daleks is a single episode, not a two-part opener.

Beginning, middle and an end but not necessarily in that order…. Amy and Rory are going to go back in time and have a chance to raise Riversong themselves.  That’s my guess how they will be written out.

I will second that yes from BeastieRunner and ad million times more to it.   Can’t wait.

I CANNOT wait until Doctor Who starts up again. I feel like it’s been forever since the last season ended! It will be so weird to see Amy and Rory leave, and that picture of the Doctor carrying her does worry me a little, LOL! But I trust Moffat to give us a good story. I work late nights at my job at Dish, so I won’t be able to watch it live anymore. Fortunately, I can count on my Hopper to have every episode recorded and waiting for me to enjoy as soon as I get home. Whatever happens this season, I do know one thing for sure: dinosaurs on a spaceship are EXACTLY what I’ve always wanted! :)
