Joss Whedon Teases He Will ‘Dig a Little Deeper’ in The Avengers 2

We might be more than two and a half years away from the release of the sequel to Marvel’s The Avengers, but we’re already geeking out over Joss Whedon‘s plans for the next time he’ll bring together Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

In an interview with Vancouver’s 24 Hours while promoting Much Ado About Nothing at the Toronto International Film Festival, Whedon teased some of what we have to look forward to in The Avengers 2. In his words, bringing the team together in The Avengers was only the beginning of their adventure.

“The creation of the team is not the happy ending,” he said. “It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I’m digging, just twist that knife. And that’s exciting for me.”

Ever since we first heard that Whedon will “contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe,” we’ve been intrigued to see what his stamp on the series will be. It turns out we likely won’t see that much of his input in the four Marvel movies leading up to The Avengers 2 beyond just leading those filmmakers in the right direction.

“Very talented people are writing and directing these movies, and what I don’t want to be is the guy they dread, who’s going to come in and say” — here, Whedon reportedly affected a “pompous British accent” — “‘Oh, well I have the power to say change this,’” he said. “I’m not that.”

The Avengers 2 is due in theaters on May 1, 2015.

I think it be cool if they used the marvel movies between now and Avengers 2 to bring together the Masters of Evil and a storyline like Avengers Under Siege. Maybe Thanos could bring them together as a way to test the team.

2015? Why is it taking three years?

Because you have to lay the groundwork with the other four “Phase 2″ movies. Part of what made Avengers movie cool was that it was grounded in the earlier Thor, Iron Man, and (to a lesser extent) Hulk movies.

Because they want it to be good … ?

I think that at the ending of Avengers where Tony has turned Stark Tower into Avengers Tower is an indication that you’ll be seeing the team breaking away from SHIELD.  The public at large will see the team as heroes but SHIELD will see them as loose cannons.

what a great idea… bring back all the baddies from each major film. EG, Loki with Thor, Red Skull with Cap, Whiplash with IronMan…
