Sony Morphing Manimal Into Movie

Sony Pictures Animation is all about reinventing old-school properties these days. After the success the studio had combining live-action and CGI in The Smurfs it has since added Alf, Popeye and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Manimal to its upcoming slate of films.

While Manimal might not rank up there with those other properties in popular, the 1983 NBC series has gained a cult status. The show followed the adventures of Dr. Jonathan Chase as he helped the police solve crimes by turning into various animals.

Sony Pictures Animation is looking for writers, but producer Glen A. Larson, who produced the original series, is attached. The idea, presumably, is to use CGI for the morphing effects instead of the surprisingly good practical ones employed on the show.

Boy this one’s so obscure I can’t believe any one took Larson seriously. I thought Larson had died years ago. My Mother The Car will be next. What the heck if we’re dragging sheer garbage out of the hole to remake why not MMTC?The last I heard Jerry Van Dyke is still alive.

Why not just do an Animal Man film I think more people would go see that.

I remember them joking about this on MST3K and then Sci Fi should showed it. NOt the worst idea I’ve ever seen. It’s not a board game. I hope Misfits of Science is next.

You have to admit it’s a cool concept that was hamstrung by the F/X limitations of the day and the shitty timeslot it was in didn’t help matters.

And I can see the reasoning behind this with most of the well known comic book properties locked up. I could see other movie companies buying up the rights to old tv shows and or lesser known movies and turning them into brand new franchises. Like: Automan, Misfits of Science, and others too numerous to mention.
