Thanos to Appear in Avengers 2, Guardians, Creator Jim Starlin Says

Thanos will not only be appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy but also in The Avengers 2, the character’s creator says.

We’ve assumed for a while that the Mad Titan would be the central villain in Guardians, and Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige all but confirmed it. However, it’s definitely news that Thanos will continue to be a presence in The Avengers 2, although it’s making good on the promise of The Avengers‘s mid-credits reveal.

This information arrives courtesy of Cosmic Book News, which caught up with Thanos creator Jim Starlin over the weekend at Montreal Comic-Con. During their chat, Starlin confirmed that a deal to have Thanos in both movies is already in place.

It will be interesting to see what this means for the arc of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase Two. Although Loki was only introduced in Thor, the third movie in Phase One, it became clear once The Avengers rolled around that he was going to be the main villain of those movies. With a bit more time to plan the next five films, it will be interesting to see whether Thanos is hinted at in Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier before he’s finally revealed in Guardians of the Galaxy. And will he even be the main villain in Guardians? There’s a chance Marvel could save him to serve as the primary antagonist The Avengers 2 — after all, we’ve heard that Magus could be the movie’s vaillain — but our guess is that he’ll be a big presence in both.

Guardians of the Galaxy is due in theaters Aug. 1, 2014, while The Avengers 2 will arrive May 1, 2015.

    PLEASE warlock and magus!!!!

  • KraziJoe

Firelord please!!! Or can they because of his allegiance to Galactus and the whole FF licensing issue?

  • Alfredo Wilson

I’m really loving the potential of this long term planning for the marvel movie universe.

  • ConchRepublican

I think Warlock/Magus would be a mistake – too complicated for the non-comicbook raised audience.

  • theaceofknaves

Hopefully people can stop talking about a Civil War movie now.

  • legionquest

Great news. You can’t have Thanos without Adam, so I’m hoping for him too

  • Lewis4510

I think that Thanos could be one of the factions whose after this Mcguffin that the Guardians came into possession of .

  • Katarzyna Skop

But they won’t since Kevin Feige has said that if Avengers 3 ever happens, Civil War be the storyline.

  • Ddkhedlind

Marvel had 2 villains named Magus. It is unlikely the technarchy magus you are thinking of is the one mentioned here.

  • Demoncat4

nice for its unfair to fans to tease them with thanos at the end of the avengers if marvel did not have plans to use him  if nothing else as the true master mind behind Lokies mishief and would rather have warlock then Magnus .or an infinty guanlet film.

  • THANOS

Universal Church of Truth led by the Magus would be a great villian and homage to Starlin’s original Warlock series. The GotG would team up with Thanos to take out Magus, then are betrayed and robbed of their Infinity Gems (Drax/Power, Gamora/Time, and Magus/Soul) by Thanny.

This would leave the Thanster with 4 outa 6 Gems since Loki was using the Mind Gem in Avengers. That leaves the Reality and Space Gems to be acquired in Thor and Cap end credit scenes.

  • BionicYouth

I don’t think he should be the main villian in GOTG, it should be someone else, if marvel could somehow get rights to annihilation that would be good. Thanos could be ‘working’ with him and as a result several of the GOTG die, before thanos ruthlessly kills ani. Unlikely.

  • Squirrel

People said that about the avengers before it released if marvel wants to go with magus I bet they can pull it off

  • theaceofknaves

no he didn’t. there has never been any mention of civil war. good, it was shit.

  • theaceofknaves

naaaa, you gotta have thanos as the big bad. he wouldn’t want to “team up” with a bunch of petty mortals. they are beneath him, he doesn’t need their help.

  • theaceofknaves

it’s not really that complicated. magus starts off as a bad guy, towards the end of the movie something happens, maybe involving the soul gem, and adam warlock manages to regain control just in time to help fight thanos.

  • BeastieRunner

I’m hoping we never see Civil War.

  • The_Unflattered

I don’t see how this rates as news. They show the Mad Titan during the Avengers end credits, grinning menacingly. What more did we need? Just give some hot “In- Betweener” action!

I’d love to see Warlock show up and find it likely in a movie in the not too distant future, but I hope they either ignore his origin as “Him” or just use him without any origin information.

  • jrau18

The news part is that he’s in GOTG.

  • http://www.facebook.com/alexjholt Alex Holt

I don’t think it has to be – you don’t actually have to explain everything at once, Warlock is as artificial “perfect” man, Magus is an evil version of him from the future, everything else is kind of optional and you can leave it as a mystery or omit it entirely.

  • percane

there’s nothing complicated about magus/warlock. magus = future warlock who turned to the dark side of the force, came back and started a church to conquer the universe. warlock’s origin is the only complicated part, but they’ll probably do like the silver surfer cartoon and make him an alien instead being created by earth scientists and remove the high evolutionary/earth 2 from his story

  • One_Flew

God yes. When i first saw the lineup for Guardians i thought the only thing it should have had was Adam Warlock.

  • Glcorp2000

Perhaps Thanos will be behind the Guardians taking on the Magus thus taking out a major rival for power!…like he Used Adam Warlock to take out the original Magus! Thus allowing him to appear in Guardians but not necessarily showing his true villiany for Avengers 2

  • Toneloak

Whoa buddy they’ve got to get the Thanos performance right the first time. Wow that’s a lot of pressure on the production team.

  • The_Unflattered

“Thanos will not only be appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy but also in The Avengers 2, the character’s creator says..”

This sentence implies that we KNEW he’d be in GoTG, but guess what? He’ll ALSO be in the Avengers!

    Oh….

    Warlock, please.

I’d KILL for a Dreadstar movie.

    Here’s an example.

    “Did you get the job?”
“Not only did I get the JOB, but I ALSO was given a company car!”

    See what I mean?

    Then he goes on…

“We’ve assumed for a while that the Mad Titan would be the central villain in Guardians, and Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige all but confirmed it. However, it’s definitely news that Thanos will continue to be a presence in The Avengers 2….”

Sounds there like he’s saying Kevin Feige pretty much confirmed Thanos’ role in GoTG (so we knew it), HOWEVER….. it’s news that he will be a presence in A2.

That’s how it’s written; that GoTG, we knew… but A2; now that’s NEWS!!

So how do you read the GoTG part as the “news”?
