S.H.I.E.L.D. Series Won’t Feature Lizzy Caplan in Recurring Role

Lizzy Caplan won’t be reprising her “Item 47″ role in Marvel’s upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. television series any time soon. The actress recently spoke with SuperHeroHype and explained that she’ll be too busy shooting her own TV show to be involved in the upcoming season of S.H.I.E.L.D.

“I can’t really, I have my own show so I will not be a regular on the Marvel S.H.I.E.L.D. show. But I am glad people are so excited about that. I think it’s a good idea,” Caplan said, adding, “Maybe I could do some little thing.”

The show Caplan is talking about is the new Showtime series called Masters of Sex. It stars Caplan as Virginia Johnson and Michael Sheen as William Masters, two real-life people who were involved in researching human sexuality back in the ’50s. It will take up much of the time that she could have otherwise devoted to S.H.I.E.L.D. but, as she says, there’s no reason to rule out a cameo here or there.

Though using Item 47 as a bridge between The Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. would have been a good idea, Joss Whedon has made it no secret that the two properties are going to be separate entities. He has said S.H.I.E.L.D. will be “autonomous” from The Avengers and will feature “new characters.” We aren’t counting Maximiliano Hernández and Titus Welliver out just yet, though. With Clark Gregg’s Agent Phil Coulson gone, there should be some connecting thread that ties S.H.I.E.L.D. back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Whedon will co-write S.H.I.E.L.D. with his brother Jed Whedon (Spartacus: Vengeance), and Maurissa Tancharoen (Spartacus: Gods of the Arena), both of whom also worked on Whedon’s Dollhouse series at Fox. S.H.I.E.L.D. marks Joss Whedon’s return to television, where he created the critically acclaimed Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse.

Production on S.H.I.E.L.D. will begin immediately, but there are no further details regarding casting for Marvel TV’s first live-action project. The show is slated to join ABC’s fall 2013 lineup.

I am kind of hoping to have Victoria Hand in there, but fear they may do to her what they did to Maxwell Lord. What was cool about Maxwell Lord (and is cool about Victoria Hand) is that he was a guy with villainous traits that still worked for the good guys. When they turned him into a total villain, it missed the point of what we liked about him. In Victoria’s case, I would like to see her working for the good guys but using devious methods to win battles. If it turns out she is the big bad behind all the conspiracies in this show, the writers would totally miss the point of what makes her wonderful.

The rights to SWORD may belong to Fox since SWORD first appeared in an X-Men comic.
