Patton Oswalt Joins Justified Season 4 in Recurring Role

Patton Oswalt is putting the funny business aside for the time being. It’s been announced the comedian will have a recurring role on the fourth season of FX’s hit drama Justified.

TVLine has the news, reporting that Oswalt will play a character named Bob Sweeney, a local constable who went to high school with Raylan Givens (played by Timothy Olyphant) and has been hired by the marshal to watch his father’s house. It’s unclear how many of the fourth season’s 13 episodes Oswalt will be a part of, but it sounds like this a significant role.

It turns out Oswalt won’t be dropping all the laughs for his turn as Bob. TVLine says his character has “a single football tale he tells over and over from his high school glory days, Al Bundy-style, while a bid to help Raylan capture a bail jumper are humorous — and maybe even successful.”

Although he’s best known for his stand-up comedy, Oswalt is no stranger to the small screen. He’s had recurring roles on Dollhouse, Two and a Half Men, Caprica and Bored to Death, and is perhaps best known for playing Spence Olchin on The King of Queens.

Justified Season 4 goes into production next week in California. It will likely premiere in early 2013. It was renewed back in March, when showrunner Graham Yost expressed his excitement about having the opportunity to continue Raylan Givens’s story.

“There are many reasons all of us on Justified are grateful to get a chance to do another season,” he said in a statement. “We get to do more work with amazing actors, writers, producers, directors, musicians, editors and a jaw-droppingly talented crew. We get to keep doing a show that appeals to a wide demographic: people in Harlan, retired US Marshals, criminals (we honestly did hear that), and, most happily, our guide, our muse, Elmore Leonard. Best of all, we get to keep doing a show on FX (and while that may sound like craven ass-kissing, when you look at their roster, you can’t help but feel grateful to be on that list).”

Oh, jeez. The best show on TV just took a noticeable hit. I cannot STAND Patton Oswalt and can’t imagine him fitting in with “Justified.” He better not ruin it or I will be seriously ticked off.

That’s awesome. I know Oswalt’s a huge fan of the show and he can be an amazing actor with the right material (Big Fan, Young Adult).
