Vaughan & Chiang's "Paper Girls" Builds a Familiar Yet Disconcerting World
On the heels of our first glimpse of Russian actress Svetlana Khodchenkova as Viper on the set of Fox’s The Wolverine arrives a mere peek at Will Yun Lee as the katana-wielding mutant Silver Samurai.
Those fans disappointed that the film’s Viper doesn’t resemble the green-haired Marvel comics villain who’s gone toe to toe with Nick Fury, Captain America and Black Widow over the past four decades should be pleased to see that Silver Samurai (aka Kenuichio Harada) is decked out in traditional armor.
Granted, the photo (courtesy of ComicBookMovie) don’t reveal much of Lee, or his character’s costume, but there are also some shots of Hugh Jackman’s claw-bearing stunt double suspended in midair by wires. So maybe those will make up for it.
Created by Steve Gerber and Bob Brown, the Silver Samurai is the son of Yakuza Shingen Yashida, and possesses the mutant the ability to charge most anything, usually his katana, with an energy described as a tachyon field. A bodyguard for the terrorist Viper and an occasional mercenary, he has crossed blades with Wolverine, Daredevil and other Marvel superheroes.
Directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma), The Wolverine is based in part on the 1982 Wolverine miniseries by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller, which found Logan battling ninjas and the politics of the Tokyo criminal underworld for the heart of his ex-lover, the daughter of a Japanese crime lord.
Jackman, Lee and Khodchenkova are joined in the cast by Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima and Brian Tee. The Wolverine opens July 26, 2013.
