The CW Sets Feb. 19 Premiere For Rockne S. O’Bannon’s Cult

The CW wants you to join in its cult. The network is even making it easy on you by announcing that Cult premieres Thursday, Feb. 19, in the 9 p.m. time slot formerly held by Emily Owens, M.D.

The series stars Matt Davis (The Vampire Diaries), Jessica Lucas (The Secret Circle), Alona Tal (Supernatural) and Robert Knepper (Prison Break) and was created by Farscape mastermind Rockne S. O’Bannon. The plot is a bit complicated, so we’ll let the network explain by way of summary and trailer:

“Investigative journalist Jeff Sefton (Davis) has learned to laugh off his younger brother Nate’s relentless string of obsessions, especially his latest rant that a hit TV show intends to harm him. However, when his brother mysteriously disappears, Jeff takes Nate’s paranoia seriously and in the process uncovers the dark underworld of the TV series Cult and its rabid fans, who are obsessed with the show’s charismatic cult leader, Billy Grimm (Knepper). As the show’s gruesome plot twists begin to play out in the real world, Jeff enlists the help of young research assistant Skye (Lucas) in a race to save Nate and unravel the mystery behind the TV series whose hardcore fans would literally kill to see what happens next.”

In July, O’Bannon and the cast appeared at Comic-Con to show off the pilot and also answer questions. O’Bannon explained that there will be plenty of twists and turns along the way as well as answers while also exploring how social media has changed society and entertainment.

“It’s an opportunity to explore that,” O’Bannon said referring to the show’s social media aspects. “There are really three levels to the show: the inside show, the Billy and Kelly show, the Jeff and Skye investigation portion, but there’s also this very thing we’re doing here today, which is the real world, our world, and all three of those integrate and are part of the Cult experience.”

If this show is a hit, would O’Bannon have leverage to get some Farscape back on the air?
