How Will Original X-Men Stars Be Used in Days of Future Past?

The roles Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and potentially Hugh Jackman have to play in X-Men: Days of Future Past have seemingly been revealed. As suspected, those actors could reprise their roles as Magneto, Professor Xavier and Wolverine in the alternative future depicted in the Days of Future Past storyline.

The confirmation comes courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter, which claims “Jackman and the others will appear mostly in scenes depicting an alternate dystopic future, so pay and time commitments are not substantial.” That implies McKellen, Stewart and Jackman won’t spend much time onscreen, instead making smaller cameos like Jackman did in X-Men: First Class. It’s still unclear if other original X-Men actors like Halle Berry, James Marsden and Famke Janssen will return as well.

“There is a lot of willingness to participate because of Bryan [Singer],” a source close to the project told THR.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is set to start shooting in January, with the film due out in theaters on July 18, 2014. Stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence are all returning.

The 1981 Days of Future Past story by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, which appeared in The Uncanny X-Men #141-142, depicts a timeline created by the X-Men’s failure to prevent the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants from assassinating a U.S. senator. In that alternate future, the giant robotic Sentinels have become the de facto rulers of the United States, where mutants are hunted down and placed in internment camps.

How will the original X-men stars be used in days of the future past? short answer…poorly with no concern given to the continuity of the previous x-men films. Why is Scott Summers in some wierd alternate 2025 future where he looks like he’s maybe 40 years old but clearly his brother was 20 something in the 1960’s (making the age gap like 50 years) and then cyclops clearly appeared as a teenager in wolverine origins….

A smart person would use days of the future past to explain why were is so many continuity errors involving first class in relation to the other films (time travel messes everything up). But this won’t happen because God forbid Fox admits that First Class was and Is a Reboot. Even if you eliminate Last stand and Wolverine origins for the continuity theres still glaring problems involving age, the fact that beast shows up as a human in X2, Magneto apparently built cerebro with the help of prof x then didn’t, professor x has no recollection of meeting mystique…and so on and so on…

It’s not hard to keep facts consistent. It just requires WATCHING the previous films. All these continuity errors just make it seem like Fox has no care for the franchise and they think the viewers are too moronic to notice the inconsistencies…

you do realize that the original movies aren’t in cannon with the new series, right? First Class is a soft reboot of sorts. the actors will be there for people to see the same faces, but not to directly link continuity. it’s more of a marketing thing and not a continuity thing.

I think it would be neat if they showed Logan in both the “current day” setting as well as the “dystopic future” but he looks the same in both. A little nod to the X-Men mythos that Wolverine’s greatest tragedy is that he will out live everyone he loves.

Hopefully the First Classers will be brought to the future to prevent the events in the third movie from ever happening.

Oh, please. Wait until the movie comes out before you start picking it apart. The truth is, none of us know what Singer is doing.

  • BryanSingerGetstheXMen

This is a fantastic opportunity for Singer to do a Dark Phoenix saga, as he initially envisioned.  Even if it means to retcon out of existence the disgustingly embarassing X3!

On the topic of returning stars; Janssen, Marsden, or anyone would be great, except for that ungrateful psycho bitch Berry. In the late 90’s her acting career was in the toilet when she was given the opportunity to play Storm.  Before X1 came out, the sociopath went on Oprah crying and complaining that there were no good roles for black actresses, and that she had to accept a role playing A COMIC BOOK CHARACTER.

I hope they have characters we havent seen or have seen but not fully seen like Warren Worthington Angel Beast

I realize this but I want Fox to officially admit it’s a reboot, I get annoyed when they skirt the line between is it or isn’t it

  • matt

and for the record I do say in my above comment that First Class is a reboot

  • Barron

First Class is not a reboot. Fox has clearly said this. And all the continuity problems can be corrected. Seeing as how X-Men has continuity problems in the comics and are corrected. Why do you think they are making Days of Future Past? They are trying to correct the continuity problems. Plus, X-4 and X-5 are already in development.
