Hannibal Adds Gillian Anderson As Dr. Lecter’s Psychiatrist

Gillian Anderson is returning next year to network television. The X-Files actress has been working on plenty of projects since the Fox drama went off the air in 2002, including an upcoming role as a psychologist on Bryan Fuller’s NBC series Hannibal, Entertainment Weekly reports. Anderson will play Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier in a stretch of episodes. Better yet? She’s Hannibal Lecter’s shrink.

“Every therapist needs their own head examined and we are ecstatic that Gillian Anderson has chosen Hannibal to mark her return to American television after 10 years to portray Dr. Lecter’s personal psychiatrist,” Fuller said in a statement. “Her intelligence and sophistication, not to mention her pedigree of ground-breaking TV, make her the perfect actress to match wits and psychological manipulations with one of the greatest villains of pop culture. I couldn’t be more excited.”

The series follows Thomas Harris’ Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) in his early days as a serial killer who also lends his psychological skills to FBI profiler Will Graham played by Hugh Dancy. The cast also includes Laurence Fishburne, Molly Shannon, Eddie Izzard, Gina Torres, Ellen Greene and Chelan Simmons playing the same character she did on Fuller’s Wonder Falls series. While an exact premiere date has not yet been set for Hannibal, it’s expected to debut next spring.

My interest meter just jumped from 0 to 10.  Recently re-watched the X-Files movie for the first time in over a
decade, forgot how great Anderson is.

Seriously, that headline alone got more people interested this show than anything else.
