Russo Brothers: "Avengers: Infinity War 1 & 2" to be Retitled
Don’t get too hot and bothered about the news that Jim Sturgess and Zachary Levi might be up for the role of Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy just yet. According to director James Gunn, the reports out about the alleged casting shortlist are a bit off.
Unfortunately, he has since deleted all the tweets he posted calling Variety and IGN out about their “inaccurate” stories. Still, thanks to the powers of the Internet, the comments still exist and we can examine them to try to figure out exactly what Gunn meant — and why he backpedaled and deleted them.
“Almost everything in the Variety article on the Guardians of the Galaxy casting (and the following articles based on it) was/is inaccurate,” Gunn tweeted first.
That annoyed Variety writer Jeff Sneider, who tweeted in response, “Also weird how Sturgess and Levi never denied it, and neither did Marvel. Maybe James isn’t on the same page as everyone else…”
When Gunn deleted his tweet, Sneider added, “Ah yes, the old ‘a posting he later removed.’ Believe me, if there was something grossly inaccurate, some1 would have called to bitch & moan”
After Gunn sent out his first tweet, IGN ran a story called “Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn denies report that Zachary Levi is in the running to play lead role.” Gunn then responded to that by saying, “I didn’t deny (or confirm) specifics. I just said the majority of the Variety article was inaccurate. So your headline is off.” He later deleted that tweet as well, but IGN has updated its story.
So what’s the deal? First of all, Marvel tends to keep quiet on rumors surrounding its most anticipated projects, so that’s likely why Gunn deleted his tweets. As for the “inaccurate” claims, the only parts of Sneider’s story that could be deemed such are the ones where he writes that Levi and Sturgess are up to play Peter Quill. Either Gunn really didn’t know that Marvel was considering the two men (which we doubt), or it could be that they’re up for roles in other capacities beyond the leading part.
