Axel-In-Charge: Extending "Secret Wars," Excitement for a "Totally Awesome Hulk"
It seems as though both of Alex Zamm’s planned live-action revivals of classic cartoons could be dead in the water. The director of the upcoming Little Rascals remake has posted test footage from two movies he had been set to direct, Marvin the Martian and Hong Kong Phooey, to his Vimeo account, which seems to imply both projects are no longer happening.
Of the two snippets of footage, Marvin the Martian looks much better. As /Film points out, that movie was reportedly axed a while ago, but the animation looks great and the premise looks fun for kids. Hong Kong Phooey? Not so much.
There was a time when a CGI/live-action hybrid movie with the main character voiced by Eddie Murphy was nearly guaranteed to be a success, but that time has long since passed. The fault in the Hong Kong Phooey footage is not in the animation (which looks great, by the way), but in the way the title character is portrayed. The majority of the footage shown features stupid potty humor where Hong Kong Phooey is seen drinking out of a toilet bowl and then a urinal, which as any fan of the cartoon knows, he would never do. Although the status of Hong Kong Phooey is technically unknown, we sincerely hope this movie never sees the light of day in its current incarnation.
