Jay-Z to Score The Great Gatsby

Jay-Z continues to get his grown man on. The hip-hop impresario known for crafting albums like The Blueprint 3 and The Black Album will try his hand at scoring a film. That’s all less surprising than the film itself: Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jazz Age classic The Great Gatsby, Collider reports. It makes sense when you think about it, though, who better to relate to the excess of Gatsby’s life than a guy who’s been living the good life since he blew up in the mid-’90s with Reasonable Doubt?

The move by Lurhmann doesn’t come as a complete surprise for a couple of reasons: First off, Jay-Z’s collaboration with Kanye West “No Church in the Wild” played over the film’s first trailer. Second, the director’s known for playing around with different kinds of music in his period piece films, just check out any number from Moulin Rouge! for proof.

This isn’t Jay’s first foray into film-based music. He actually created an entire concept album after seeing Ridley Scott’s American Gangster. It’s not the movie’s official soundtrack, but it is heavily associated with the film and takes cues from its plot.

The Great Gatsby stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Isla Fisher and Gemma Ward. The film premieres May 10.

um, what? does this mean Just Blaze is scoring the music, but Jay-Z will get the credit and say “HOV” throughout the film? because I’ve never heard of Jay-Z creating a piece of original music EVER. outside of his lyrics, of course.
