Guardians of the Galaxy Rumor Points to 3 Drax Contenders

Dave Batista, left, Brian Patrick Wade and Isaiah Mustafa

No sooner had Smallville alum Michael Rosenbaum added his name to the list of contenders for the lead role in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy than a handful of other casting rumors emerged.

According to ComicBookMovie, “Old Spice guy” Isaiah Mustafa, Generation Kill actor Brian Patrick Wade and former professional wrestler Dave Batista are in the running to play Drax the Destroyer in director James Gunn’s space adventure. While the veracity of the report isn’t known — the information is attributed to “a source” — the three men are certainly around the right height for the character; Wade is 6 feet 3 inches, Mustafa is 6 feet 4 inches, and Batista is 6 feet 6 inches.

In Marvel comics, Arthur Douglas and his human family were killed by Thanos. Needing a champion capable of defeating the Mad Titan, the cosmic entity Kronos rescued Douglas’ spirit and placed it into the body of Drax the Destroyer, a being with superhuman strength and durability, and the ability to create blasts of cosmic energy.

The website also contends Marvel is “still high on” The Office star John Krasinksi for the lead role of Star-Lord, which implies the actor’s name had been mentioned before, alongside the likes of Zachary Levi, Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace, Eddie Redmayne, Joel Edgerton and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. However, I don’t recall Krasinksi coming up in any of the previous reports (although he was supposedly up for the role of Captain America in 2010).

Guardians of the Galaxy opens Aug. 1, 2014.

Mustafa is certainly tall enough but is too thin and kind of lanky unless he bulks up considerably. Batista has the body for it but has no acting experience. Don’t know much about the other guy to have an opinion.

I believe a better choice would be Jason Statham

I only care about his voice, not the look. They can suit or CGI the look.

I’ve always heard him and Thanos with a Kevin Grevioux voice. That’d be my pick for either.

Jason Statham for Rocket Raccoon! it’s the perfect casting

I don’t like them having drax without moon dragon. I like the dynamic. And I wonder if they’ll stick with the story that he used to be human. Which even comic writers seem to ignore

The old spice guy? WHY do people keep thinking he’d be good in a Marvel movie? The guy can barely act, he’s just a bloody body model. I actually think The Rock could work as Drax, or maybe Djimon whatsisname from Blood Diamond.

Krasinski as Star Lord? I could see that, and it makes sense after he came close to getting the Cap gig.

Give it to Batista! Size does matter when it comes to Drax. Acting, not so much.
