Transformers 4 Lands Jack Reynor

Michael Bay has cast relative newcomer Jack Reynor to star opposite Mark Wahlberg in Transformers 4.

“He is an Irish kid that came to America with 30 bucks in his pocket,” the director wrote today on his website. “Pretty ballsy. Seriously who does that? Anyway I spotted him in a great little Irish movie What Richard Did. This kid is the real deal.”

Presumably the 20-year-old actor is playing the race car-driving boyfriend of the daughter of Wahlberg’s character. Bay began testing in November for the movie’s young male and female leads; Reynor was on the rumored shortlist alongside such actors as Luke Grimes (Brothers & Sisters), Landon Liboiron (Terra Nova), Brenton Thwaites (Blue Lagoon: The Awakening) and Hunter Parrish (Weeds).

The director used the casting announcement as an opportunity to reaffirm that the fourth film isn’t a reboot of the Paramount Pictures franchise. “That word has been floating around on the net,” he wrote. “This movie takes place exactly 4 years after the war in Chicago. The story makes a very natural transition, and reason as to why we have a whole new cast. This Transformers will feel very different then the last three. We are embarking on a new trilogy.”

Transformers 4 opens June 27, 2014.
