ILM Explains How It Created Hulk For Marvel’s The Avengers

We’ve been circling around this for a while now, but the moment that many Avengers and visual-effects geeks have been waiting for has finally arrived: Industrial Light & Magic has released two featurettes showing how its team created the animation for the Hulk.

“When we started Avengers, we knew right from the beginning we could nail New York City and the aliens and the different Avengers, but at the end of the day this film was going to judged on the Hulk,” ILM VFX Supervisor Jeff White said in the video.

The two featurettes reveal how the ILM team went from capturing actor Mark Ruffalo’s facial expressions to translating them into the big green rage machine we saw on the big screen. Their awesome take on the Hulk was largely a big part of what earned the team their Oscar nomination.

A division of Lucasfilm, ILM also worked on Marvel’s Iron Man and Iron Man 2. With Disney’s $4.05 billion purchase of Lucasfilm, ILM and Marvel are now corporate siblings.
