J. Michael Straczynski to Direct WWII Drama The Flickering Light

J. Michael Straczynski

Comics and screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski has secured financing for his World War II drama The Flickering Light, the first film from his new production company Studio JMS, Variety reports. The film also marks Straczynski’s directorial debut.

Based on a true story, The Flickering Light centers on a group of Romani prisoners in the Berlin-Marzahn concentration camp who were forced to work as actors during production of Tiefland, a movie directed by and starring Nazi propagandist Leni Riefenstahl.

“During the day, they were on set, being fed, cleaned up, looked after, and at night, back in the camp again,” Straczynski, who wrote the script, explained in July at Comic-Con International. “And so for many of them, the movie became reality and the camp became the dream, or, the nightmare.”

Production is set to begin in November, utilizing the same sound stages at Berlin’s century-old Studio Babelsberg used by Tiefland.

Reliance Entertainment’s Motion Picture Capital, which is providing the financing, will produce The Flickering Light alongside Straczynski and his Studio JMS partner Patricia Tallman, Grant Hill and Norman Golightly. Leon Clarance, Deepak Nayar and Marc Rosen will executive produce.

Known for his comics work and as the creator of cult-hit series Babylon 5 and Jeremiah, Straczynski wrote the 2008 Clint Eastwood drama Changeling, as well as the screenplays to Ninja Assassin and Underworld: Awakening.

“The film also marks Straczynski’s directorial debut.” If you don’t count “Babylon 5″ Sleeping in Light (1998) and Babylon 5: The Lost Tales (2007) then that statement is true.

Good idea. Keep the man busy not doing comics.

A better way to put would be “Motion Picture directorial debut”, definitely.
