Hayley Atwell Will Have Cameo in Captain America 2, Tucci Says

cap-new3

Although Hayley Atwell reportedly said just last month she wouldn’t be reprising her role as Peggy Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it now appears those plans may have changed.

In an interview with Collider, her Captain America: The First Avenger co-star Stanley Tucci discussed how much enjoyed playing Dr. Abraham Erskine, developer of the Super-Soldier Serum, in the 2011 Marvel film. And while expressed disappointment that he hasn’t been asked to return for a flashback, he revealed Atwell has.

“I’m really sad,” he said. “I know that Hayley is going back to do a flashback scene, but I have not been asked.”

Atwell would join fellow original cast members Chris Evans (Captain America/Steve Rogers), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), along with Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter) and Frank Grillo (Crossbones).

Directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, The Winter Soldier is believed to be based on the Captain America storyline of the same name, which revealed Captain America’s sidekick Bucky Barnes didn’t die as expected during the war. Instead, an amnesiac Bucky got snatched by the Soviets, fitted with a bionic arm and programmed to serve as an assassin known as the Winter Soldier. The secret is revealed in the present day after Barnes attacks the Red Skull and blows up part of Philadelphia. The film opens in 3D on April 4, 2014.

So it has been confirmed that Emily VanCamp will indeed be playing Sharon Carter?

  • Orphan

I think Sharon Carter present day should be a black actress.

There’s really no reason to believe otherwise. So far there has no been news of any new character not seen in the comics. Emily VanCamp has already been confirmed as the leading lady. It stands to reason that she’s playing Sharon Carter.

So the Red Skull IS going to be in Captain America 2? I thought he wasn’t.

That would be hard, but not impossible. That would mean Peggy would have to had a child with a black man, as Sharon is her daughter. With the racism of the past, it’s easier to fathom for a white man to get a black woman pregnant (see Nick Fury II). Black men could have been accused of rape, even in a perfectly loving relationship. That’s a big can of worms. Not sure if it makes a point about diversity or adds a dimension to the plot.

The Red Skull bit in the article is a synopsis of the comic book in which The Winter Solider first appeared.  There’s no reason they couldn’t find a different way to introduce him.

YAY! Though, I’m not too excited for Capt. America 2. Emile Van Camp? No fucking thanks.
