Del Toro Updates Dark Universe, Reveals Desire For ‘Proper’ Origins
Guillermo del Toro is moving forward with Dark Universe, his planned Warner Bros. film featuring some of DC Comics’ supernatural characters, revealing he’ll be pitching his idea soon.
“I am going to be presenting my storyline to DC and Warners of where I want to take this universe,” he tells Total Film. “We do have a writer, but until that is firmed up, I have to keep it a secret. I hope it happens. […] “It’s going really really well. It’s like meeting old friends. I grew up with Demon Etrigan, with Swamp Thing, with Deadman, so these are characters that are near and dear to my heart.”
First rumored in November as Heaven Sent, the film was quickly confirmed by del Toro as something he was just “discussing” with the studio. By January, however, the filmmaker was already talking about an outline and lining up the “perfect” writer for Dark Universe.
Although del Toro is understandably tight-lipped about story details, he did tell Total Film that he’d “love to use the origins that are proper to each character.”
“I love the idea of Jason Blood as a paladin and a knight,” he says. “I love the entire Constantine mythology, the Deadman mythology, the Alex Holland Swamp Thing mythology. These are really rich things to well, and to dig.”
That’s a tall order for one film, particularly considering del Toro previously mentioned a desire to also include The Specrte, Zatanna and other characters he hesitated to name, “because then you’ll know the plot.”
