Axel-In-Charge: Waid & Samnee on "Black Widow" and the Dawn of the All-New, All-Different Era
Archer is FX’s little gift that keeps on giving. The animated series is getting the best ratings of its four-year run, which is why it’s no surprise that FX has announced it is bringing the series back for fifth season.
Also exciting is that FX is changing the category in which it submits Archer for Emmy consideration. Instead of being entered as an Outstanding Animated Series, Archer will instead be named an Outstanding Comedy Series. Thus far only leading man H. Jon Benjamin has gotten an Emmy nomination, for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance in 2010, but hopefully that will change going forward. Something needs to replace 30 Rock, right?
“Archer is one the very best comedy series on television,” Nick Grag, FX’s executive vice president of original programming and development, said in a statement. “Adam Reed, Matt Thompson and the incredible cast – H. Jon Benjamin, Aisha Tyler, Jessica Walter, Chris Parnell, Judy Greer, Amber Nash, George Coe, and Lucky Yates – are comedic geniuses. It is truly rewarding the way in which the audience and fans have embraced their work and that the ratings to continue to grow. The quality of Archer is undeniable.”
When Reed got the Season 5 pick-up news, he reportedly said, “Thank God.” And when he told Thompson, Thompson responded, “Called it.” This could be our favorite press release we’ve ever received.
There will be 13 episodes in the newly ordered season of Archer. Season 4 is currently airing on Thursday nights, with its season finale hitting the small screen on April 11. Rumor has it that it’s going to feature one of its best guest stars yet.
When Spinoff recently had the chance to catch up with Benjamin in a conference call, he revealed that he has his own ideas for what he hopes happens to Archer in the future. “I just like feel like I want him to gain, like, 15 pounds, like he won’t metabolize alcohol as well or something soon,” Benjamin said. “He is pretty rock-solid, appearance-wise. That doesn’t change. Maybe he’s gotten in better shape. I haven’t checked under the shirt.”
