Gary Oldman’s going to continue his pop-culture tour of film with a leading role in Fox’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The chameleon-like actor known for movies like Sid and Nancy, JFK and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy has also joined in on the fun of blockbusters like the Harry Potter franchise, Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies and the in-the-works RoboCop remake. Now he’s getting in on the Planet of the Apes action.

Deadline reports he’ll play Dreyfus, leader of the human resistance in San Francisco. Oldman joins fellow castmates Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty) and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In). While no details about the other characters have been revealed, we do know the sequel takes place 15 years after the events of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Directed by Matt Reeves, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is expected to start shooting in the spring for a May 23, 2014, release.

    Yawn.

Considering Rise was too boring, Dawn ought to stay in Development Hell.

Fantastic. Rise was a dark horse winner, one of my faves of 2011.
