Which Long-Absent "Arrow" Character Is Returning in Season 5?
Resident Evil has had a long life in film. Debuting in 2002, the science fiction/horror franchise starring Milla Jovovich and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson has spawned four sequels, with the most recent being Resident Evil: Retribution in 2012. While it was highly unlikely that Anderson and Jovovich wouldn’t return for a sixth turn at the wheel, FirstShowing reports that both the director and actress have indeed signed on.
Anderson has been on board with the franchise since day one, both writing and directing every installment. Resident Evil: Retribution ended with Jovovich’s character Alice regaining superpowers and about to take the last stand for humanity against hordes of zombies and mutated creatures, meaning it was perhaps a foregone conclusion that Jovovich would return. However, Resident Evil 6 may be the end of the franchise, as Anderson stated after the third Resident Evil that he had plans for a new trilogy, which a sixth film would logically conclude.
Although the film franchise contains many of the same elements and characters of the video game franchise from which it’s based, the universe of the Resident Evil films is its own entity with different continuity than its video game counterpart. Jovovich’s Alice character is completely unique to the films, and started as a security operative working for the Umbrella Corporation, but rebelled in the first movie and subsequently gained massive powers in the process of fighting Umbrella’s zombies and biomutations. Resident Evil hold the title of most successful film series based on video games, collectively bringing in $897 million worldwide.
