Veronica Mars Movie Kickstarter Passes $2 Million Goal in One Day

If there were any doubt that, nearly six years after the show’s cancellation, fans are still clamoring for more Veronica Mars, they were extinguished Wednesday with the record-breaking Kickstarter campaign to fund a movie starring Kristen Bell and much of the original cast.

Launched by series creator Rob Thomas, with the blessing rights-holder Warner Bros., the effort rocketed past its $2 million goal in its first day — it’s garnered $2.6 million in pledges, with 29 days to go — reaching the $1 million mark in four hours and 24 minutes, the fastest ever to do so on the crowdfunding site. It’s also the largest film project in Kickstarter history.

“We couldn’t be happier. We really couldn’t,” Thomas wrote on the Kickstarter page. “My wife says I’m insufferable, but she said that four days ago in anticipation of a day like today.”

The series starred Bell as snarky Neptune, California, teen Veronica Mars, who worked as an assistant to her father in his private investigation business. Each episode would see Veronica solve a smaller mystery for one of her peers, while also getting closer to figuring out the season’s big mystery. The show was known for its serialized storytelling and its strong commitment to character. Veronica Mars originally aired on UPN in 2004, but shifted to The CW in 2006 following the merger with the WB. The movie, which is expected to begin filming in June, will feature the central cast returning to their hometown for a high-school reunion.
