Transformers 4 might be taking the franchise in a new direction, but it’s still being set in metro Detroit. The Michigan Film Office sent out an announcement that says the new Michael Bay movie has been approved for a film incentive from the state, and also unveiled the first plot synopsis we’ve seen for the project.
NOTE: The plot details have been removed at the request of a lawyer representing Paramount Pictures.
Bay had previously said the new Transformers movie will feature a new cast of robots, so this synopsis sort of reveals how they will come into play. It’s still hard to picture a Transformers property without Optimus Prime, Megatron or Bumblebee, but Transformers 4 is supposed to be the reboot movie after all.
Thus far, Transformers 4 stars Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz, and Jack Reynor as an “Irish kid that came to America with 30 bucks in his pocket.” It’s due in theaters on June 27, 2014, and is the next project in Bay’s docket now that he’s finished Pain & Gain. He has frequently explained that Transformers 4 will start a new trilogy in the Transformers movie universe.
“That word has been floating around on the net,” he wrote back in January. “This movie takes place exactly 4 years after the war in Chicago. The story makes a very natural transition, and reason as to why we have a whole new cast. This Transformers will feel very different then the last three. We are embarking on a new trilogy.”
