MGM Jumps on Tomb Raider Train

Tomb Raider

Lara Croft might just be more popular than ever, thanks to a new game simply titled Tomb Raider that sold more than a million copies in 48 hours, reintroducing a nearly 20-year-old franchise to a new audience. The game takes a “Year One”/Batman Begins approach to the character, putting her on a dangerous island and showing everything she’ll do to survive the situation.

When the game came out earlier this month, Crystal Dynamics head Darrell Gallagher announced the studio had been working closely with GK Films to create a film based on the new game’s storyline that will have nothing to do with the existing Tomb Raider films Lara Croft Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider Cradle of Life starring Angelina Jolie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Crystal Dynamics and GK Films will have a major Hollywood partner in the form of MGM. Production is said to be in the works as of now, so expect to see director and casting announcements in the not-too-distant future.
