Luke Evans Bites Into Dracula

The Raven

Universal Pictures has found its latest monster. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film formerly known as Dracula Year Zero but now simply titled Dracula has its toothy lead in Luke Evans. You might know Evans as Aramis in The Three Musketeers, Zeus in Immortals or Detective Fields in The Raven. He joins a long line of talented and beloved actors who have filled the cape, going back to Bella Lugosi, Christopher Lee and Frank Langella.

As the original title implies, the film actually takes place before the events of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel and Universal’s 1931 classic. Stoker based his vampire character on Vlad the Impaler, who has his own influence on this story. “The script tells of a young prince who, when the lives of his wife and child are put in danger by a bloodthirsty sultan, risks his soul to save them, and in the process becomes the first vampire,” THR explained.

Gary Shore, a commercials director making his big-screen debut with this project, is helming based on a script by newcomers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. This film was originally set up for Alex Proyas (Dark City, Knowing) to direct, but got shelved because of budget concerns. In February, Universal announced it was bringing the project back on the exact same day that Warner Bros. announced it was moving its own Dracula story Harker into production.
