Is This Captain America’s New Costume For The Winter Soldier?

With the premiere of Iron Man 3 only weeks away, the focus shifts to Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as fans and news sites search for any details about Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy (OK, and Ant-Man, too, but that’s Phase Three). Last week that resulted in widely circulated concept art and stills discovered through the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled Blu-ray box set, and today it brings a potential preview of what Captain America’s costume will look like in the 2014 sequel.

Courtesy of ComicBookMovie arrives what’s likely licensing art for The Winter Soldier that shows a costume that has as much in common with what Chris Evans wore in 2011′s The First Avenger as it does the one from last year’s The Avengers. Here the chinstrap is back and, while it’s difficult to see from the angle, the midriff stripes appear to be there, but they’re more subdued. Note, too, the fingerless gloves and the suggestion of a shoulder holster.

Directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America: The Winter Soldier also stars Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), along with Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter), Frank Grillo (Crossbones), Max Hernandez (Agent Jasper Sitwell) and Robert Redford as the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. The film opens April 4, 2014.

Looks like they’re going closer to Steve’s Heroic Age uniform (what is now Nick Fury Jr’s)

  • Frank

The uniform appears to be the “Super Soldier” one that Cap wore briefly while Bucky took over as acting Captain America. That being said, it’s cool as maybe a stealth or sneaking suit but I hope we get a more traditional cap costume as well in the sequel.

The fingerless gloves, strapped boots, red stripe down the leg, and what looks to be multiple white stripes across the chest make it look like this is the Commander of S.H.I.E.L.D./Super Soldier outfit that Steve Rogers wore during The Heroic Age. With a Captain America helmet.

  • Silvio

Looks like his Steve Rogers: Super Soldier design to me. Check out the breast emblem and the red stripe on the side.

  • Vizator

This movie sounds almost as busy as Avengers with all of those people.

  • lewis4510

It appears to be a hybrid of his original First Avenger uniform and the Heroic Age uniform he wore when Bucky took over as Cap.

Hopefully we’ll get a better look at Falcon’s outfit and wings next.

  • Mike

I like it. Cap’s look in Avengers was just about the only thing I didn’t love from Avengers.

  • Squirrel

Only thing I don’t really like is the fingerless gloves, just seems like an odd piece for a cap costume. That said definitely seems to draw from the Super Soldier costume, and as deviations from the classic go I think I’d like this more than the Avengers movie costume, and almost as much as the WWII cap cotume. It feels more in line with the aesthetic of the WWII costume

  • knightangel5

(Sigh!) I just knew they were going to give him a stupid looking chin strap as soon as Marvel changed it in the comics lately. As this way they can turn round and say the film is following the modern comics.
I think I must have been the only person in the world who preferred the Avengers outift. (I know the head piece had problems, but that was probably partly because it didn’t have ears or winds to avoid that condom head look.) I actually appreciated the fact that it was an attempt to do a costume that was unashamedly a take on the superhero outfit.

Hate this trend towards toning down the outfits. (Supes outfit worked well enough on Christopher Reeve for instance..)

Though Wolverine is the notable exception as I always thought it was a bit out of character for him to go around in bright yellow. (Could of had something like the brown outfit though..)

  • Tony

I bet the final color scheme will be closer to classic Cap, but I like this overall design. It’s better than the design in the Avengers, IMO.

  • shadowpdf

I would prefer it to be just a little more like the comics. Perhaps just use the colors more. I really don’t like that every costume in comics mimics the clothes people wear in real life: all dark and gloomy.

  • Topher

I think the Avengers suit is far and away the best. But i seem to be in the minority. Not sure what everyone’s fascination is with Deadpool-ing everyone’s costumes with harnesses and pouches. Let Rob Liefeld design one so we can get it out of their systems.

  • Chris A

I prefer the First Avenger outfit to the Avengers one. The Avengers one looked like someone dressed in a Halloween costume. Spandex doesn’t work. All the other avengers looked liked they had practical uniforms except for Cap.

I wouldn’t worry about his mask if I were you. In Marvel’s movies the masked characters tend to not wear their masks half the time anyway. Look at the Spider-Man movies, Captain America, the Avengers and even Iron Man half the time their faces are exposed anyway. The only one that bugs me is Spider-Man as his identity is supposed to be a secret. Captain America and now Iron Man are both public figures even in their private identities so not so upset they will unmask in a fight. It bugs me when someone like Spider-Man or Batman does it though.

  • Jack

You do realize they added the chinstap in the comics because it was in the movies, right?

  • http://www.facebook.com/lead.sharp Lead Sharp

I loved it to, you’re not in the minority :)

I’m liking this enough, just don’t take it too far from the comic, even the new look in the comic.

  • Hypestyles

Maybe we’ll see USAgent or Anti-Cap in part 3

  • Louis

Not everybody needs to be “Deadpool-d,” but not everybody needs to wear spandex. In the case of Cap it’s stupid for him, a government agent and soldier, to not wear something with harnesses, pouches and anything he might need to assist him on his mission.

  • batGRRRl4ever

Well in the context of the Avengers movie it was literally designed by a fan boy, and the design had clear elements from the WWII movie stills they had Cap star in before he actually got involved in that war.

  • batGRRRl4ever

If one looks close Cap does have bright red stripes going up the sides of the costume.

  • batGRRRl4ever

By FAR! No more Captain Condom Head for us like in the Avengers movie! Yay!

  • lorex

this a vast improvement over the POS outfit he wore in The Avengers

  • traind

I hope you are in the minority…the avengers costume was horrible. Maybe the worst decision they made on avengers although there were a few other problems too.

Settings these movies in the “real” world means making adjustments. Hawkeye didn’t wear bright purple because that color just doesn’t work. Polyester Captain America doesn’t either but they went with it anyway :(

  • http://www.facebook.com/dane.georges Dane Georges

It seems they are trying to make him more appealing on an international level, because this in no way screams ‘MURICA.

  • Clerk57

Yeah, thats definitely the Super Solider design from a few years ago.

  • SpiderS

Avengers costume had terrible mask, but costume by itself was okay. This one, though not as true to original look, is much better for stealth/spy/political context that movie is heading for. Doesn’t make much sense to go on stealth missions in bright colors and most importantly this costume still says Cap, to me anyway.

  • jocs

it resembles heroic age steve rogers get-up, which i dig, given the context of the heroic age. i like it for the movie if it was used as a tactical/black ops uni. it already looks like most of the shield unis in the mcu. but as a main costume, i’d rather go for avengers uni, which was really superhero-y, or first avenger uni, which seemed appropriate given the ww2 setting.

captain america is a symbol, more than anything. he wears a flag on his chest. this costume doesn’t deliver that idea to me.

  • Dick Grayson

Not enough red in the uniform. Other than that, I dig it.

  • Rich Yan

    Bleech!

  • http://twitter.com/marvelprince S. Prince Lewis

I like to movie costume a lot too, but the helmet completely ruined it for me. This design rocks and the helmet works it.

  • earzmundo

Preferred Buckycap’s costume that alex ross desgined

  • fearitself

No one read the comics here? Steve wore this outfit when Bucky donned the real Captain America uniform. No way Bucky is going to be the Winter Soldier and then don the uniform in THE SAME MOVIE.

  • http://www.cogonline.net Digital Jedi

There was nothing wrong with the movie version costume, other than the fact that they smoothed his helmet out. Subconsciously taking away the wings took away from what we expect of Captain America’s look. Had they stylistically addressed that absence better, I don’t think as many people would have noticed or complained. The little details can occasionally be crucial.

  • http://www.cogonline.net Digital Jedi

All movies have a lot of people in them. Kinda assists with the whole plot thing.

  • Tim

Let’s hope so. That helmet in the Avengers was UGH! Those ear pieces were so unnecessary.

  • brownbear34

I want him to have a gun…..he’s a soldier for goodness sake, not a random crime fighter which means that he kills if and when he needs to.

  • JW Scott

The Cap movie seemed to have it because that suit’s look was seemingly patterned after the Ultimate version. They added it to the modern Cap in the comics after the Avengers movie though. (Probably because of all the internet whining about how goofy the suit looked in that movie.) So I think it was a pre-emptive way of setting up the outfit change for this movie. And it looks TERRIBLE in the modern comics. But I guess we’re going to be stuck with it now because that’s the direction the movies are going in..

  • Devil_Dinosaur

    You’re both in the minority.

  • http://www.facebook.com/lead.sharp Lead Sharp

Then it’s a very cool minority.

  • http://twitter.com/sabrebIade Sabre

Design is okay but since he is Captain AMERICA could we not have brighter red, white and blue? Why are bright primary colors evil on a guy that’s supposed to be a symbol?
Batman, Punisher, those guys are supposed to be dark.
In Avengers 2 I guess all the uniforms will just be black.

  • Oliver Slager

this suit is awesome , it the next suit right , awesome that’s so cool. This is going to be the best of his suits, hey but were’s the red either way it still the best no red looks fine as long as there’s blue. captain america’s the best avenger ever.

  • Thomas A. Rice

*Spoiler Alert* I heard in the movie Cap breaks into the Smithsonian and gets his old WWII suit back! I guess he was tired of the Agent Coulson’s Cos Play outfit from Avengers!

  • Thomas A. Rice

He needs to wear his classic scale mail shirt! that would be perfect for real life movie. It affords him protection and has that textured look that Thor’s arms have when armored up.

  • Thomas A. Rice

I blame that Avengers’ outfit on Fanboy Coulson, I believe Whedon wanted the outfit to look impractical and garish. That’s why Stark and Banner both made comments to Cap about being “Spangley and of no use.”
