Fans of Insomniac Games’ Ratchet & Clank series for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 have long believed the characters were well-suited for a full-length animated feature film. Evidently, the folks at Rainmaker Entertainment and Blockade Entertainment agree, as Variety reports the studios have teamed up to adapt the video game franchise as a feature film to hit theaters in 2015. Jericca Cleland is slated to direct a script by Insomniac senior writer TJ Fixman with several of the game’s voice actors including James A. Taylor (Ratchet), David Kaye (Clank) and Jim Ward (Qwark). Rainmaker president Michael Herreron will executive produce with Kim Dent Wilder serving as supervising producer and Kylie Ellis on as producer. Blockade CEO Brad Foxhoven will also produce alongside the company’s vice president of development David Wohl.

“We’ve always thought Ratchet and Clank would be a fantastic all-ages movie and are thrilled our intergalactic heroes will finally get their chance to shine on the big screen,” Insomniac Games founder and CEO Ted Price told Variety. “Insomniac is especially honored to play a hands-on role with the film’s production, including the screenplay, consulting on character development and animation, and adding support to the film’s marketing.”

Foxhoven added that the production companies would work closely with both Sony Computer Entertainment America and Insomniac to insure the story would stay true to the franchise’s extensive mythos.

Ratchet and Clank is a world-renowned video game franchise that appeals to a broad audience,” Foxhoven said. “By working closely with SCEA and Insomniac, we will remain true to the game’s expansive mythology while also creating a story that will capture the imagination of those who will be new to this incredible world.”

Ratchet & Clank debuted in 2002 as a PlayStation 2 video game, introducing players to Ratchet, the last of the Lombax race with a knack for shooting huge and unique weaponry, and Clank, his tiny, intelligent robot companion. Insomniac has released 11 games primarily starring Ratchet and Clank, most recently Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault in 2012. The characters also made an appearance in the franchise-crossing fighting game PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.
