Anthony Mackie Suits Up as Falcon on Set of Captain America Sequel

With Captain America: The Winter Soldier now in production, photos have already begun to leak from the set, including a first look at Chris Evans and Scarlet Johansson in their superhero costumes and the duo confronting Max Hernandez as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Jasper Sitwell. While Evans, Johansson and Hernandez are all Marvel Cinematic Universe alums, fans have yet to see some of the newcomers in The Winter Soldier.

However, now Comic Book Movie has posted the first behind-the-scenes images of Anthony Mackie as The Falcon, giving the best look yet at the character’s design for the upcoming sequel.

“I’m happy to say that I’m in a good deal of the movie and I play an integral part with Captain America taking down the Winter Soldier,” Mackie said in April. “It’s great. They started the shoot 2 1/2 weeks ago and once I finished doing press for Pain & Gain, I go in and join them. I’ve been doing combat training and fitness training just to get prepared. It’s going to be something and I’m excited for it.”

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the sequel also stars Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter), Frank Grillo (Crossbones) and Robert Redford. Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens April 4, 2014.

so, they are gonna insert the wings in post-production, I guess.

  • Keith Clardy

So…no red at all other than the goggles?

  • Will M.

The clapperboard in that last photo is the first I’ve been aware of the film’s working title: “Freezer Burn.” Awesome.

  • humandivine

    cant wait for freezer burn!

  • Derek Metaltron

Whilst I’m happy to see Falcon in the MCU I really wish they’d at least made his outfit red, it would make it seem less generic than it looks right now. Good choice of actor though.

  • GLJeremy

I am guessing this is not his final costume and more like the one Hawkeye wore in Thor and the beginning of the Avengers. I like it but it doesn’t feel “super” heroic yet. I think later in the film we will get something sleeker, and a bit more red.

  • Keith Clardy

Totally agree! I’m sure that they’re just writing Sam Wilson as a basic S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who is forced to don an experimental flight suit (probably written to be Stark technology) to assist Cap and the Black Widow, but would it hurt for the suit to have a little red on it? I’m sure it will remain basic in this film and then Wilson will officially debut as Falcon in “The Avengers 2″ wearing a uniform of the character’s traditional colors (similarly to how Hawkeye debuted in “Thor” as Barton and then appeared as Hawkeye in “The Avengers” in his purple uniform).

More than likely the wings will be placed in post production, i can’t imagine making actual wings without some type of cgi would be much to be impressed with. I like how they are going with the Ultimate series costumes with the films though, it gives them a more “real world” appearance.

  • Red Mask

    He looks ready to rock!

  • Nathan Defosses

Now we know why the Ultimate line of Marvel books exists to begin with. They are essentially pitch material for films. The regular Marvel is often too garish to look good in a live action flick, so Marvel started the Ultimate universe to show to studios and directors and say “See? It can be like this instead”.

  • Alfredo Wilson

I love how it says freezer/burn but still has Cap’s shield on it.
I do wish there was a little more red in the costume but he maybe it’s not his final one like others are saying. It doesn’t look bad though.

  • Thedude3445

If the current Ultimate Comics storylines were the breeding grounds for future Marvel movies, I would be much more excited. Okay, mostly I just want to see President Captain America onscreen, but you know. I wish it were more than just the costume designs…

  • Michael Mah’moud

I think Clint was wearing his Ultimate uniform just like it looks like Sam is going for a ultimate route here.

  • ls1200

I hope he harnesses the power of farts.

  • walt kovacs

who cares….all hail king kirby the creator of the first black superhero…done against the wishes of racist stan the man

  • Krampusnacht Christmas

    Yeah they will.

  • Marvelfan

This could be part of a flash back sequence or something….before he becomes Falcon. Maybe he’s running some kind of military operation or something. who knows. It’s too soon to tell. I’m just glad this is finally in production.

  • Shallbecomeabat

I am a big Cap fan, but I will never get the Falcon. I mean he talks to birds and flies on holographic wings?!? And people make fun of Aquaman…

  • sowat

…meanwhile, I’m pretty sure Stan wrote FF#52, the first appearance of that super hero, making him and Kirby CO-CREATORS of the Black Panther…anyway, I’d rather see BP as an Avenger, he was also the first Black Avenger and a fairly early member, joining before members like Black Widow and Falcon, but this movie gives Falcon the edge in joining the movie team. Plus, the upcoming Avengers cartoon has the movie cast + Falcon as the only Avenger not on the team in the movies, so it seems this was the plan. From a movie point of view, it probably will make more sense for Falcon to join through his Captain America association rather than bring BP out of nowhere (save him for the FF reboot?). Gotta follow the narrative flow.

  • Jimmy

They’ve taken a visually striking character and made him look like he’s from a GI Joe cartoon. Not EVERYTHING from the Ultimate Marve Universe has to be used. Cap has a cheesy coloured costume. Falcon needs one too.

  • Ghostblood

It’s early but this does nothing for me. The only way I know this is the Falcon is because the article title says so. Another Marvel screen hero who’s now carrying guns that he never carried in the comics. Whoopee.

hey genius. you think the ability to telepathically communicate with birds is stupid? think murder of crows with eagles, hawks, falcons or any other caniverous bird of prey and i think you will see how dumb that assumption is.
