Amazing Spider-Man 2 Set Photos May Reveal a Really Big Spoiler

There was talk as early as October that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 would at least build toward the death of Peter Parker’s love interest. However, depending upon how much you want to read into the latest photos from the film’s set, a retelling of “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” may be arriving sooner rather than later.

Courtesy of The Daily Mail, we get a look at Emma Stone wearing a purple dress, mint-green coat and thigh-high boots, an ensemble hauntingly similar to the one her character wore in 1973’s The Amazing Spider-Man #121, which famously ended with Gwen Stacy dying after being hurled by the Green Goblin from the top of either the Brooklyn Bridge or George Washington Bridge (depending whether you believe the art or the text). While there’s no indication that the Green Goblin appears in the Sony Pictures sequel — instead, Electro and the Rhino are the villains — it’s worth noting the Brooklyn Bridge is in the background of the photo showing the Spider-Man stunt double.

Of course, this simply could be a matter of director Marc Webb having fun at the expense of comic fans. Or, it may mean Gwen is taking a dive off the Brooklyn Bridge in the next film.

Opening May 2, 2014, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 also stars Andrew Garfield, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Shailene Woodley, Colm Feore, Paul Giamatti and Sally Field.

night gwen stacy died

  • pooerpants

I thought Paul giamatti as rhino was an old rumor and not confirmed.

  • Kyle McHenry

“Just let me climb up on my Spider-ladder, here, then i’ll be ready to swing in and save you.”

  • Steve Rosa

The suit from the first movie was better, they just had to add the lenses from this new suit.

  • fearitself

hahahahahah I’m laughing my ass off.

  • indeciSEAN
  • matt

looks like agent coulson in the car…..

  • Gabbi

Everyone seems to wait for Gwen to die, but I’m really hoping that the movie team are just pulling our leg. I love Gwen as a character so much, and even though most people seem to like MJ, I have never been a big fan of her. I want Gwen to live!

  • demoncat_4

kind of doubtful given marvel is now run by disney that they would do the death of gwen stacy. though they could indeed be setting it up for the sequel since the green goblin is not in this one this time around. and with out him gwen doen’t take the dive off the bridge.

  • dregj

gwen will die in the third one when osbourne finally comes out of the wood work rather than appear in the shadows at the end

  • dwright

  • Michael Fitz-Gibbon

Didn’t Gwen wear that frequently, though?

  • The Arrogant Hipster

    Calm down, internetz.

  • David Fullam

Crap, I hoped it would have been the producer telling Jamie Foxx he was fired.

  • Adam Mangum

Disney doesn’t own Spider-Man, Sony does.

  • SeaDogBoy

If I recall correctly, Disney does not yet hold the movie rights to Spider-man and related characters; however, if the classic “Death of Gwen Stacy” isn’t at the hands of the Green Goblin, heads will roll – Mouse or no Mouse!

  • Adam Walters

Sony makes the Spidey movies and Green Goblin has been cast for this movie.

  • Adam Walters

    No it doesn’t.

  • demoncat_4

the movie rights but disney owns the character and proably has some say in the movies . which includes if gwen will finaly get whacked and give spidey some growth like in the comics when it happen.

  • demoncat_4

true spiderman is one character disney does not have the movie rights but sony still proably has to get the okay from kevin and disney over how spiderman is done on the screen. and no doubt sony is not going to have gwen whacked by another spider rogue. unless they change it so gwen falls off the bridge by herself by accident.or some other spidey rogue bumps her fighting spiderman and oops bye bye gwen nice seeing you on screen splat.

  • demoncat_4

well then it looks like gwen is not going to be around for the sequel. bye bye gwen was nice seeing the character . so sorry gwen did not have a longer time in the spiderman movie verse but with the green goblin and that pic. gwen is sadly going bye bye . mainly off a bridge.

  • spider boy

yeah fire foxx cuz i bet you would b a GREAT Electro (sarcasm)

  • spideystud

Yea man, me too. I wonder if they’re going to include the part where she runs off to France for a few months because she was pregnant with Norman Osborn’s kids.

    That’d be cool, right?

  • Liam Beard

This is not a coincidence, they are bringing a new mj to the next movie so if she dies we all know who peter will quickly love and save and all that crap

  • Thedude3445

I call bluff. It’s going to do a DCAU subversion and we all know it.

  • kalorama

Nope. Sony can do whatever they want in a Spider-Man movie and there’s nothing Disney can do or say about it.

  • demoncat_4

if that is true that marvel and disney has no real say in what sony does with spider man on screen. then guess fans maybe be ready to cry over gwen after this film for now its could be that she is going to not be around for a sequel care of the green goblin and a bridge. we shall see.

  • yesiamaplant

I like the return the classic look. Spidey’s costume, more than any other superhero’s is such a perfect piece of graphic design. It always catches your eye, and its just exciting to look at from any angle.

But man do I hope they don’t opt to recreate that panel. The last thing we need in movies is another melodramatic crane-the-camera-away-while-the-hero-holds-his-dead-girl-and-shouts moment.

  • Savonti

I agree with you on the costume change. I found the one for the last movie interesting but it’s nice to see a more classic version.

I can’t agree with your second point though. Yes the shot is a bit cliche I don’t think anyone will argue that. The thing is, we’re talking about the death of Gwen Stacy here. It’s just such an important moment in not only the history of Spider-Man but in comic history as well. If they’re going to do it, I think it needs to be as close to perfect as we can call something and in situations like this, “perfect”.

In this situation, I judge “perfection” not only on how well it is acted and scores, but how close the scene is to the way that it was drawn in the first place (quick tip of the hat to Gil Kane folks).

  • jason malinoski

    Even in the shower.

  • nicky

This movie will get nowhere for killing gwen. Anyone who wants or even thinks she should is a sadist.

  • Mike James

I’m assuming it doesn’t happen until part 3, it would be too big of a re-telling if Green Goblin isn’t responsible. Based on the Osbourne’s being in part 2 I’m assuming the ending will either introduce Goblin or set up his origin to take place in the next film.

  • Reggie Yamanaka

it would be cool if the 2nd one has foreshadowing of Gwen Stacy’s death throughout the movie…like they show her on the bridge as if she’ll die in the future…BUT! they don’t wait until the 3rd movie to kill her…they kill her at the end of the credits…that would be such a good cliffhanger!

  • Nicky Reagan

You movie makers want this movie to do terrible? Be my guest if you’re going to kill a great character from the movie.

  • perryz1991

I thought they were gonna pull the same damn thing LMAO

  • ricardo aqquino

horrrible saga ever… this saga is just horrible, sorry guys but with terrible performers, suits that are really hilarious, probably in an alternative universe… but totally out of the comic strip history… enemies that looks like toys and not really villains… anything less a comic adaptation, looks more like a serious parody. This spiderman picture make him look like the guy who works advertising in a used cars sale…so weak and poor

  • Nicky Reagan

    Gwen dying, not interested

  • avgnoix

Sony’s better off with Spider-man than Marvel look what they did to the Ultimate Spider-man cartoon.

  • Brenda

    totally does.

  • X-MAN

    thank god.
