Iron Man 3 Shoots Past $1 Billion

Iron Man 3 rocketed past the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office on Thursday, becoming only the 16th film to do so, trailing just behind 2008’s The Dark Knight.

About $700 million of that is derived from overseas receipts, which TheWrap seems to largely attribute to Disney’s decision to co-finance the Marvel sequel with a Chinese partner and focus its marketing on growing international markets.

Director Shane Black’s film, which released a special edition in China with extra footage top actress Fan Bingbing, has grossed more than $102 million in that country alone, followed in the overseas markets by South Korea ($56 million), the United Kingdom ($49 million), Mexico ($43 million) and Russia ($39 million).

Iron Man 3 opened in North America to the tune of $175 million, the second-largest ever, behind 2012’s The Avengers. Joss Whedon’s ensemble film passed the $1 billion mark in just 19 days, compared to Iron Man 3‘s 24.
