Whedon Confirms Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are in Avengers 2

Although Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was hesitant to guarantee that Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch appear in The Avengers 2“The draft could change six months from now,” he said — writer/director Joss Whedon appears confident they will. (Note: Potential spoilers for Iron Man 3 follow.)

Of course, he was the one who initially teased the sequel would feature “a brother-sister act” who were his “favorite characters from the comic book,” thus signaling a roster change.

Speaking with this week at ABC’s upfront presentation in New York City, Whedon confirmed that he was indeed referring to the mutant children of Magneto, and explained the he finds them intriguing.

“You know, they had a rough beginning,” he said. “They’re interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn’t necessarily agree with the Avengers. So they’re not there to make things easier. I’m not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier.”

And amid reports that Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr., free from his multi-picture deal with Marvel, is in high-stakes negotiations to reprise his role in The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3, Whedon offered a ray of hope to fans.

Asked about the events of Iron Man 3 posed a challenge to bringing Tony Stark into the Avengers sequel, the writer replied, “Well, I feel like in Iron Man 3, even though he said, ‘I’ve changed’ — he blew up his remote suits, but I don’t think anybody thinks he doesn’t have one anymore. The question is, if The Avengers are called, does he show up? And the answer is, ‘Yes!’”

Mind you, the character’s inclusion in the film’s first draft is no guarantee the actor will return. Still, it’s something.

nice for if any one would know if scarlet witch and quicksilver are in deed going to be in avengers 2 its the guy making the film himself. and iron man even if its some one new in the suite. it should be a given by marvel for him in avengers 2 .

I have the feeling that Marvel is really just wanting to snag anything used in both the properties they have and the ones that still belong to Sony and FOX. I doubt FOX will want to use the Maximoff siblings after they are branded Avengers.

  • darthtigris

OR Joss wants to use them because he likes the characters. Not everything is a conspiracy all of the time …

  • Chris Tucker

Personally, while I like quicksilver and scarlet witch, I just don’t know about this. I mean I just don’t know how they would introduce these characters to the audience and give a whole back story and not only the characters themselves, but mutants as well. I mean you can’t just assume that because people have watched the Avengers and their respective movies, that they are going to know all about mutants, and just as well, these 2 characters have never been shown or fleshed out before.

I’m sure in all honesty the movie will be amazing, and I really shouldn’t worry, but how are they going to (supposedly) have all these characters, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, as well as possibly others such as Guardians of the Galaxy, and have time to flesh out the characters of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver? Not to mention other possible characters as well… Avengers managed to pull it off great giving screen time to each hero pretty equally and very well, but I don’t see it as a time to introduce new characters or give any kind of backstory on them.

I love those two characters, but if people see quicksilver in avengers 2, everyone will think the flash in JL movie is a ripoff, when its the opposite.

  • Chris Tucker

I thought Avengers 2 would be out before a JL movie… but whatever… Quicksilver > Flash anyway.

Except that they can’t be mutants as FOX holds the rights to all things mutants. Pietro and Wanda have been in a gray area though as they are also Avengers but for them to be used by Marvel they cannot use the word mutant in relation to them. So Marvel has to come up with something else to explain their powers.

  • Toni Goodman

You do know that the two of them are known as Avengers among fans and writers than they are X-Men property, right? Joss is a comic writer, so he doesn’t think of using Wanda and Pietro as “taking from Fox.” He thinks of using two Avengers characters (as they have been for the past like…50 years) and putting them in the series they belong in.

  • Toni Goodman

No one is going to think that. The Flash is a much more well known character than Quicksilver.

  • Ronnie

They can just say they were born that way. Just don’t use the word “mutant.”

  • Marcellus Hendricks

He wont be after the Marvel Hammer drops and Whedon makes the Quicksilver actor a star. Flash is so much better but Marvel knows how to get it done.

  • Gabriel Perez Gutierrez

Flash is well more known due to the ‘Wally West’ era, plus both Justice League’s cartoons, and couple of animated movies, also, Flashpoint movie is coming out soon so, people will know by the time A2 comes out who is The Flash, Marvel knows how to bring it down and get it done, right yes but DC owns the animated-verse

  • LightningBug

Fox holds the rights to all things X-Men. Does that mean they hold the rights to all things mutant? I’d think that the only part of these characters backgrounds that they would have to shy away from is that Magneto is their father.

  • bw

Joss, why are you holding the bow upside-down?

  • LightningBug

Is the flashpoint movie animated? If so, then it will not have anything to do with how well known flash is. Only comic fans and some kids watch those. Yeah, Flash is much better known than Quicksilver right now, but if A2 comes out before a live action JL, flash will be definitely be playing second fiddle to Quicksilver as far as the general public is concerned.

  • LightningBug

This is awesome. I hope they get a lot of screen time. More classic Avengers please!!! Vision, and Hank and Janet next please!!!

  • Janet

    F*ck Hank.
    Damn wife beater!

  • Trollolo You

I want him to confirm the Sentry for Avengers 3.

  • LightningBug

Obviously Hank Pym is a douche bag, but he’s compelling when he is well written.

  • V

He’s not gonna use characters who will make things easier for the Avengers? So no Wasp then? :( She brings the heart and soul to the team.

  • Happily LS

Handling massive casts of characters is one of the (many) reasons they hired Joss. Just watch Firefly– 9 characters, each of which shines.

And for all we know, the roster may change from movie to movie just like it does in the comics. Maybe Hawkeye will sit the next one out. Seriously, he has a bow and fucking arrow, how’s that gonna help with Thanos? (Sorry, Hawkeye fans).

  • XSpectreGreyX

I agree. With the first movie, Widow and Hawkeye were just sort of there. They had one real aspect to their personality and nothing else.

  • XSpectreGreyX

The Flash is a pop culture thing. People who haven’t been exposed to comic book related media at all know the concept of him at least. That’s most of the Justice League’s original seven. E.g Aquaman (except obviously the warped public perception of him), Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman. He’s much more well kwown.

  • XSpectreGreyX

Yeah… I don’t think Joss needs to add anymore characters. Maybe develop the ones he already has? I love Joss, but this feels too risky, especially due to the whole “no mutants” (see what I did there?) thing.

  • Christopher Mulligan

My vote is Whedon puts Alyson Hannigan in Scarlett’s Costume, and James Marsters to step into Quicksilvers boots.
