Much has been made of Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s 11, Magic Mike) retiring from film after the completion of his HBO Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra. However, Deadline reports he’s in talks to direct and produce a new series for Cinemax called The Knick starring Clive Owen.
The Knick will kick off with a 10-episode season set in 1900 New York. A medical drama focuses on the people working at Knickerbocker Hospital, doing their best to save lives with the limited science and technology of the day. Jack Amiel and Michael Begler (Big Miracle) wrote the pilot on spec and sold it to Cinemax.
Soderbergh’s Behind the Candelabra, which stars Michael Douglas as Liberace and Matt Damon as his younger lover Scott Thorson, debuts Sunday on HBO.
