Man of Steel Goes Behind Scenes With New 13-Minute Featurette

Considering all of the trailers, TV spots and photos already released for Man of Steel, you might think we’ve seen all there is to see of director Zack Snyder’s franchise reboot, short of watching the movie itself. Well, you’d be wrong. Apparently.

With less than two weeks until the premiere, Warner Bros. has released a staggering 13-minute featurette that goes behind the scenes with the film’s cast and crew, who discuss everything from character motivations to costume design to what led to new to explanation for Superman’s iconic “S” shield (as you’ve likely already seen, on Krypton the emblem stands for “hope”). Bits and pieces of the commentary will be familiar from last week’s “Battle of Smallville” featurette, but most of it is new.

Opening June 14, Man of Steel stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as Zod, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Ayelet Zurer as Lara Lor-Van, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Antje Traue as Faora, Christopher Meloni as Colonel Hardy, Harry Lennix as General Swanwick, Michael Kelly as Steve Lombard and Richard Schiff as Dr. Emil Hamilton.

A young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.

What I find interesting is that it sure looks like the Clark Kent/magical glasses identity won’t be a part of this film. If so, that makes sense – you can’t be “realistic” and also maintain the idea that the ace reporter Lois Lane is going to be fooled by a pair of glasses. I base this on the clip with Lois going to the Kent farm to speak to Martha about her son. It looks like Lois has figured out who Clark is. Indeed, there may even be some suggestion that much of the town of Smallville may know something about Clark. Certainly, it seems unlikely that Superman could walk down the mainstreet of Smallville, where he grew up, and not be recognized.

By the way this isn’t a reboot. It is a desperate ploy by all involved to take this tired out warhorse into megabucks territory.Let’s hope they succeed. Then maybe they can figure out a way to make a NEW storyline with this character that won’t bore the crap out of the rest of us.The S stands for hope. For crying out loud what is this My Little Pony? If this fails then WB/DC won’t simply move on to other better characters but go back into fetal position and bring out another Superman Origin film and try to repackage the same package again and again.

What I never understood about the glasses is that they could simply say that they have some Kryptonian tech in them that makes a hologram or can shift his features or something. Such an easy explanation.
