Fury Cameo Would ‘Legitimize’ ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D., Jackson Says

There is no S.H.I.E.L.D. without Nick Fury. At least, Samuel L. Jackson doesn’t think there should be a S.H.I.E.L.D. without Nick Fury — but perhaps others at Disney and Marvel disagree.

Jackson spoke with Vulture recently about whetherhe could have a role to play on ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the first small-screen extension of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor said he’s interested, and even has an idea for how it would work.

“If I was going to do S.H.I.E.L.D., I’d like to be — you know Charlie’s voice on Charlie’s Angels? That would be perfect,” he said. “Because everybody recognizes my voice. That would be good enough for me. And I told Joss [Whedon] that.”

Apparently, that might not be good enough for everyone.

“He can’t hire me, I guess,” Jackson said of Whedon’s thoughts on the idea. “Disney, Marvel, we’ll see what they think.”

Perhaps even a voice appearance from Jackson could encroach upon his reported nine-film contract with Marvel Studios? Would a new deal need to be worked out to allow his voice to appear on S.H.I.E.L.D.? Those are questions for you contract experts out there. For now, I throw my support behind what Jackson says about his Fury-voice cameo: “It would legitimize the show in another way.”

Airing Tuesdays this fall at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stars Clark Gregg as Phil Coulson, Chloe Bennet as Skye and Brett Dalton as Grant Ward, and co-creator/pilot director Joss Whedon. The series also stars Ming-Na as Agent Melina May, Elizabeth Henstridge as Agent Gemma Simmons and Iain De Caestecker as Agent Leo Fitz.

Im hoping he shows up for the season finale. Which If I had my way would lead into Captain America: Winter Soldier.

Disney owns ABC….why would that violate his contract? They can’t do an addendum to allow him on the show?

  • dekko

The show can be used the way the after-credits scenes were used to build suspense and tease upcoming projects. It’d be more expedient than having a whole film to introduce certain characters or plotlines. They should also follow the “Torchwood” method of killing off cast members all the time! (Coulson being the new Captain Jack – he can’t be killed!!)

My only thought is that maybe it would count towards his contract fulfillment, and they don’t want to blow an appearance on a TV cameo when they can use him in a movie instead.

That said, I doubt it would even be an issue. It seems like Jackson would be willing to play Fury as often as he’s asked too. I don’t see why they wouldn’t want him there, at least in the very small role that he’s suggesting, as it would certainly benefit the show in my opinion.

If they absolutely cannot use Jackson at all, I suppose they could bring in Nick Fury’s dad, Nick Fury Sr. of the past 50 years. Maybe they could even use David Hasselhoff!

Why are people pretending like they know what the hiccup is? None of us know. None of us has any idea whether or not Jackson is asking for too much money, or just trying to weasel his way into doing one less Marvel movie than he has committed to (providing just a couple of voice recordings, instead of waking up early, putting on makeup, and learning/performing lines in front of the camera is infinitely more work). Hell, for all we know, maybe Gregg asked that Jackson not be involved, so as to not overshadow his character.

Let’s stop acting like we do, and we have all the answers.

  • Jon

Posted that too quickly. Clearly, I meant to say that providing voice recordings is infinitely LESS work than acting in another full-blown movie. Not more.

  • JP

Who’s pretending to know? It seems that you’re the one jumping the gun here. Everyone else is simple theorizing, guessing, or just asking questions.

IF appearing on the show would count towards fulfilling the contractual
obligation he made when he signed the avengers contract (and who knows
if that’s the issue or not) then there would be a pretty simple business reason why Marvel/Disney wouldn’t want it. Because when his current contract is up, they’d have to negotiate a new one for him to make any further
appearances in the franchise. And given how hugely successful it’s
become and how integral a part of it he is, Jackson would likley have
considerable leverage to get more money in negotiations for a new deal. Jackson is a significant asset for them and given that (A) the films have a much bigger profit potential than the TV show and (B) his salary is probably below market on a film scale and above market on a TV scale, from a basic business perspective it’s in Disney’s best interest to leverage that asset where it would provide the biggest return at the lowest (relative) cost for as long as they can. On a cost/reward basis, he’s much more valuable to the movie franchise than he is to the TV show..

It’s basic cost/reward theory. (Again, assuming that it is a contract issue.)

considering Disney is paying him peanuts as it is they might as well renegotiate. Unlike RDJ, Jackson seems in no hurry to leave the Marvel Universe.

Also the Shield show looks terrible. I could see it on a Syfy type network or ABC family. But primetime ABC? Disney needs Sam JAckson to legitimize the show. Right now it goes 3 seasons at best, but I see it struggling in its first season, and possibly gets pulled in the second .

Everything about this show besides phil coulson makes me cringe. Malinda May and Leo Fitz, they came up with this trash in 5 mins. C’mon at least get whats her name Colbie as Maria Hill. Everyone besides phil is gonna be some awful acting… Malinda May lol. I already hate these characters just from the trailer.

A guest appearance here and there throughout the season by Nick Fury!……come on it’s a no-brainer because there is no S.H.E.I.L.D without him!

Racsim and I don’t give a damn what anybody thinks who disagree and if you have something to say on your end, then go wipe your bleeding booty fool.
