Dwayne Johnson is officially ready to rock out as Hercules.
Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures have announced the start of principal photography on Hercules, the Brett Ratner-directed action flick starring Johnson as the legendary hero. The impressive cast includes Ian McShane of Deadwood and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Rufus Sewell of Dark City and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Joseph Fiennes of Shakespeare in Love and Flashforward, and John Hurt of V for Vendetta and Alien. Filming is taking place in Budapest, Hungary.
This morning Johnson tweeted the above glimpse at the three-hour daily process that transforms him into the Greek hero.
The official plot synopsis for Hercules reads as follows:
Everyone knows the legend of Hercules and his twelve labors. Our story begins after the labors, and after the legend…
Haunted by a sin from his past, Hercules has become a mercenary. Along with five faithful companions, he travels ancient Greece selling his services for gold and using his legendary reputation to intimidate enemies. But when the benevolent ruler of Thrace and his daughter seek Hercules’ help to defeat a savage and terrifying warlord, Hercules finds that in order for good to triumph and justice to prevail… he must again become the hero he once was… he must embrace his own myth… he must be Hercules.
Hercules is based on the Radical Publishing comic Hercules: The Thracian Wars. The film is due out on July 25, 2014.
