G.I. Joe: Retaliation’s Jon M. Chu on Board to Direct Sequel

The G.I. Joe squad is coming back, and their leader is returning with them.

Deadline reports that G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu is set to helm the next installment of the franchise for Paramount Pictures and MGM. He’s reportedly still in the “making a deal” phase, but Chu’s own recent activity on Twitter certainly suggests it’s essentially a done deal.

No returning cast members have been confirmed, but it’s safe to say the studio will want to bring Dwayne Johnson back for the lead role of Roadblock, if no one else. (Bank on Snake-Eyes, too. Always bank on Snake-Eyes.)

As for a release date for G.I. Joe 3, there’s no hard news yet. Deadline says “it’s early days” on the project, and that Paramount is currently “meeting with a short list of four writers and should set one shortly.”

Premiering in late March, nine months after its original release date, G.I. Joe: Retaliation grossed more than $360 million worldwide.
